RCP simply averages out the results of other companies' polls, with no weighting for sample size, each pollster's track record, or any of a long list of other factors that can make a big difference. Their numbers are worth nothing.

That’s correct. There are occasional outliers that can temporarily impact the RCP averages in one direction or the other. However, the polls they include are generally made up of polls by major firms that run polls for ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, NBC, NYT, WSJ, WaPo, etc. And there are usually multiple presidential approval tracking polls conducted on an ongoing basis.
