What is most painful though, is when your sincere apology is not accepted.

I completely agree.

When we offer a sincere apology, we are completely opening ourselves up, revealing our vulnerabilites and weaknesses and owning them.

We are also offering a contract for something better.

When that isn't accepted, it is very hurtful, can be insulting as though we aren't worth the effort and leaves us with a very bitter taste in our mouth.

I love it when flirting goes to PM.
 
And sometimes, even if someone accepts the apology, they still look at you as though every word and action is a potential cause for more pain. That hurts as bad, when you sincerely want to make amends, but everything you say or do just makes things worse.
