"Magnum XL," Josh said nonchalantly. Then he started rubbing her back. "I know it's a little awkward, socially, but it would be nice to be introduced to your friend here. He seems like a..."
Paul cleared is throat, interrupting Josh.
And then the two guys started… arguing about the size of Josh’s penis? This was surreal. The guy who only agreed to sleep with her because she was doing his homework seemed irritated that she wasn’t introducing him to her friends, and now it sort of seemed like two guys were having a spat because of her. That didn’t make sense. Guys didn’t even notice her, much less fight over her.
Josh was tense beside her as he cut Paul off mid-sentence. "Of course you did. You've been glaring at me since I came in and flirting with my girlfriend. Which I really don't like." He squeezed her against his side.
Girlfriend?!? She couldn’t have said anything if she’d wanted to. He’d left her absolutely speechless.
But he still wasn’t through with Paul. "So what you're going to do is ring up the condoms, thank us for our patronage and never, ever mention this night to anyone. As far as you're concerned Nora is a lady and I had better not hear about you saying otherwise to anyone."
Paul rang them up without saying another word. Josh had called her his girlfriend. She couldn’t meet his gaze, so she stared at the black and white checkered linoleum on the floor while Josh finished the purchase and then she followed him out of the pharmacy without ever looking up. He had called her his girlfriend.
"I'm sorry about that back there Nora,” he said once they were outside. “I hope I didn't cause you any distress. I understand if you're not still in the mood. We shouldn't let him ruin our night, but," Josh sighed, "yeah."
She waited to answer him until they were both in the car. Josh had called her his girlfriend. She fiddled with the keys, but didn’t start the ignition. Staring at the dash, she said, “I didn’t know he’d be here… Paul, I mean. And… I’m sorry I didn’t introduce you. He’s my lab partner in chem and physics. He’s just… a friend, and he wouldn’t say anything—not like you implied, not about me. You didn’t have to threaten him.” Or lie to him by calling me your girlfriend.
“He’ll know that I’m not…” she let her voice trail off without finishing her sentence. That I’m not really your girlfriend. And she had a feeling that Paul would also know just how desperately she wished she was.
She started the car and pulled out of the lot, gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were while. Where had all this craziness come from? She was a boring person. She had a boring life. She didn’t know how to function with all this… excitement. “As for ruining our night,” she glanced over at him then back to the road. “I don’t know… I don’t know if it’s ruined. I don’t know if I’m still in the mood. Right now, I don’t know anything.”
