having my wisdom teeth was one of the worst medical experiances of my life :( i won't repeat the details but i can't imagine going through in two stages.

I had all four of mine out at once, under general anesthesia. The only bad thing was that the pain med they gave me (Tylox) was too strong and made me loopey. I had to go back for something that was less powerful.

I had more than the full compliment of wisdom teeth, some removed by a dentist, some by a dental surgeon. Dentists specialize in saving teeth, surgeons in removing them.

I highly recommend having it done by a dental surgeon. Nothing like a valium IV with a barbituate drip as far as I'm concerned.
Nothing.

I guess the arrangements have been made. Pain isn't the only reason to have wisdom teeth removed. Sometimes they weaken the bone they grow in because there isn't room for them, or are crooked or something , so they don't function properly.

I will be getting mine taken out someday. I was told to come back in when they start to hurt me again, and they'll look at them. I just want them out! All at once, so I don't have to do it twice.

I forgot to tell you something useful.

Stop for a milkshake on the way home before the drugs wear off.
You may not be able to eat or drink the next day.

Great. Not that I didn't know this.. but I'm so not looking forward to it.. someone baby me please *pouty lips* cuz it's just gonna me be once I get home.

April.. I feel your pain.. the stupid thing is, they might not come in for months, yano? Too bad they won't yank them now.

I had mine out on September 11th, heh. My bottom left side was impacted severely and screwing with a nerve that threatened to paralyze my jaw, so that sucked. Doc gave me happy shots and then a nurse said, "Oh my Gawd, the WTC blew up!"

Then, blackness. But the recovery wasn't that bad. Chicken noodle soup and a lot of chamomile tea. I had a huge lump on my face that made me look deformed for about two weeks.

I had both my bottoms taken out. I don't have any tops so that wasn't an issue.

Definitely get them all taken care of at once so you never have to go through it again.

And a little trick here: When you are recovering, you will probably get a big muscle knot on your jaw, like a big lump. It will be sore but not hurt when you touch it lightly or rub it a bit. Put Tiger Balm on it. Rub the stuff in. It takes down the swelling a lot. Also, give your face a steam bath. You know, the old, towel over the head and bent over a steamy pot trick. Moist heat takes down the swelling.

It won't be that bad, you'll feel much better when it is finished with.

Get some good books to read and just relax afterward.

don't eat anything you have to suck on (eat the milkshake with a spoon, not a straw) because that can tear the stiches. i ate mostly baby food while i was recovering.

Lickerish,

I would say get all 4 taken care, since you will already be under.

I had no problems when I got mine taken out. However my wife who had to be put under. Ended up getting dry socket in her lowers & she had one hell of a time.

Also you may want to take a couple of tea bags with you. After it's done they have you bit down on some gauze to stop the bleeding. Which made me nauseous, however the tea bag helped offset the taste of the blood.

Heh I did eat. A taco salad from taco bell. I was starving as I was also at the time breastfeeding my son. That was one good baby through those days! ;)

I also need to put in,that I only had one pulled the others were cut out.

By the way, this one is me.

I forgot another tip, seems like an obvious one but it really isn't. Get several of those Hot or Cold Ice packs and keep them ready, since you will need them all the time.

Oh, and rent some movies.

milkshake, tiger balm, hot/cold packs, tea bags, movies: check.

i've heard of this dry socket.. is it common?

and yup, that would be me in my av... it 99% of the time is. :)

Ahhhh... you're quite pretty. (I know most people hate to be called "cute" so...)

:)

yes.....i have......buttt.....that's not what is wrong with me...just a lil brain damage...the alcohol.....the acid.....we dunno fer sure.......but it's not 'cause i had my wisdom teeth pulled....

hmmm....on the dry socket....prolly a lil astroglide...would help....

I change mine about once every two weeks...just for general confusion, but I think I will keep up my Halloween one for a while. It is one of only two I am willing to show the public, mostly because I don't look like an absolute ass in that one...well, okay, a little ass.

yeeeah, i'll keep that in mind.

thanks raw.

you look fine Sateema :)

I had four of my wisdom teeth removed when I was about 15 or 16. It was recommended that I have them all out as they were impacted and would cause horrendous pain later on, not to mention they'd do a number on the rest of my teeth. I had to be put under for the procedure as well.

After the surgery, I remember feeling quite groggy. Because I bruise easily, I looked like I was in one hell of a fight. I do remember having a lot of juice and soups. It was one hell of a weight loss technique ;) If I remember correctly, it took me about 6 weeks to get back to normal. I still wasn't comfortable eating foods I had to chew too much but that gradually went away.

If the surgery has been recommended, it's better to get it all out of the way at once then to have it drawn out.

I had three impacted wisdom teeth, the fourth was apparently never there to begin with. I had them all surgically removed, and was sufficiently doped up with a lovely Valium/Demerol IV drip while they did it. While the surgery wasn't painful, I did get an infection, and that was painful. I'd suggest getting them all removed at once, who's to say the other three won't begin to bother you at some later date? Also, follow your dentist's instructions about gargling salt water or antibacterial mouthwash, and ask if they will be giving you any antibiotics to stave off infection.

Great advice, the HOT salty water will not be a nice thought, but it'll work wonders for you. I think it helps to close the gums and heal faster. I didn't get much for drugs afterwards, I think they were like 50mg something or others, but I took them as they told me too, and didn't have any pain afterwards.
