A newspaper tycoon... and a very horrible man.

He sent Stanley to look for Livingston, even though the latter wasn't actually lost. this then set up a whole series of similar things, even sending people out on expeditions to then send someone to "find" them at a later date... many lives were lost (including one spectacularly awful one in Siberia).

If i can remember correctly, he ended up living on a boat so he couldn't be arrested.

So Gordon Bennett was a massive philanthropist who funded Dr Livingstone's trip to find the source of the Nile.

The original blasphemous phrase was God Blind Me - which evolved into Gor Blimey and then the religious changed that to Gordon Bennett

there is (was?) also the Gordon Bennett cup, which was a yacht race and also a car race... the former, sort of, gave rise to the America's Cup race. Most of this is from memory.

anyway, he was a crazy character, but with a lot of blood on his hands - the Jeanette disaster was pretty bad (although it did open up the idea of the Arctic drift, used by Nansen later to try and get to the North Pole.
