Anybody know anything useful about Tinnitus?

What do you mean by psych drugs? My mum has suffered with it for years. She is practically deaf in both ears now though (she's 90) but takes the drug Stugeron. The doc took her off it (can't remember why) and it made her tinnitus worse. It definitely does help with it.

Any real solutions that don't involve Psych drugs?

I have had it for a long time. The Doctors are zero help. It seems to be most annoying when I am trying to go to sleep. Their solution a white noise machine played louder than the high pitched ringing. REALLY? How does that help?

My wife has had it for years, and I still don't understand it. She's not supposed to vacuum, because of the noise the vacuum cleaner makes. White noise machine? I'm more puzzled than ever....

My cousin uses tiny little in-ear gizmos (like hearing aids) that have been calibrated to 'cancel' his tinnitus by producing an opposite white noise.
He can now hear normally even while wearing them.
Every six months he goes to get them checked. Oh, and the tiny battery lasts 3 months so he can leave them in all the time. And they're waterproof.

My mate Mel swore that two pints of Guinness ameliorated his.

I guess it depends on how bad you have it. I developed it within the past year, but it only seems to come on late in the evening. I'm not having a hint of it right now.

I've found I can sometimes get it to stop simply by tilting my head or turning my neck and facing in a different direction.

Obviously, mine is not a bad case.

Him Indoors has had tinnitus since a concert during his teenage years. He takes no medication for it.

Instead, he's found by trial and error that have some types of sound quietly played (not loud) in the background sort of takes his mind off the tinnitus and then it becomes less bad of its own accord. He's tried fans before, but a rain sound effect seems to work better for him now.

He's also found that it gets worse if stressed or overtired, so he makes sure that he rests when necessary.

All of this.

Also check ears are well maintained ( by audiologist, and probably not with syringe) and also......just incase, check other potential sources of noise which can aggravate. For me gas boilers are often a very quiet but aggravating pitch, for example, and things left on standby, in the night. Off at the wall!

I hear tv's whining! It's so distracting! Off at the wall indeed.

It allows me to immediately hear another wanker queen post on its way anytime anyone pens a health issue-related thread.

I LOVE that you follow me around!
It's like having a [virtual] puppy.....only not

What do you mean by psych drugs?

One that I've seen mentioned is Xanax and that's some thing I will have NO part of.

I'm not sure if mine comes and goes or if I just don't notice it at times. Sometimes one ear, sometimes both. What's really odd is that at times, I can hear it 'switch on', from nothing or nearly nothing to quite loud in an instant.

Is stressing causing the issue? Then Xanax may help. It is not a pysch drug, it is a benzo. As long as you don't abuse them, you would be fine.

I've had it in my right ear for a decade. Really annoying if I let myself think about it. Best solution is to tune it out. Don't listen to it. I know it's hard! I also tell myself it sounds like something pleasant. For instance, I imagine it sounds like the sounds of a summer night. You know what I mean? Those high pitched buggy sounds. When I do that, I feel less anxious about the fact that I can't get away from the constant noise because I am making a positive association to it.

If it's in one ear, you may need an MRI. One sided tinnitus can be a sign of a tumor. My doctor ordered one 5 years ago. Luckily they did not see anything concerning.

I have been dealing with it for years. I have not tried to use any drugs just because I generally try to avoid them anyway, but, I believe mine gets worse as my blood pressure rises. So I have tried to avoid foods and activities that would cause a rise in blood pressure such as staying away from, salt excess sugar and so forth. Large amounts of caffeine also make it worse.

Good luck, I think that being in a slightly noisy environment also helps just as a distraction. Really quiet places make me more aware and then I sometimes dwell on it.
