I is something older guys have to deal with. If you have diabetes (type 1 or 2) you will be on meds that will hurt the libido.

An idea is to practice kegels. I do this and it certainly helps me.

The thing is, it is treatable but only IF you seek the treatments available. I have read that by far, most men will not seek any form of treatment. I also know this happens because a friend's husband is having issues and they haven't had sex in months but he won't go to the dr and it's making her crazy. Guys, it happens and is not a reflection on your manhood in the least. Talk to your dr. If you don't have one, get one.

My wife is pre menopausal (self diagnosed) and had had zero interest in sex, yet won't talk to her Dr. Driving me crazy. We went from her not being able to get enough of me to never wanting anything. It's frustrating. I find her info on various hormone therapies to talk to her Dr about and she won't because of fears about old estrogen hrt that went so wrong for so many women. I get the fear, but at least talk to the Dr.

I never thought I would be one of them! My complaint is fairly benign though; I have Peyronie's syndrome, which causes scar tissue inside the erectile body. Probably too much wanking!

It's great to see so many offering good advice! Type II diabetes is a difficult disease to deal with. Ask your doctor if the medications you are on could be contributing to the ED. Hypertension meds also can cause problems, and if you have a good report with your doctor, he will change your meds for you. Unfortunately, diabetes can sometimes cause irreversible ED. Be sure you explore all possible avenues, including depression and the mental and emotional aspects that can affect your performance as well.
As for natural remedies, be cautious of these. As someone else mentioned, they can be very damaging, especially if you have certain other illnesses, or if you are unfamiliar with how to safely use them. These things are unregulated on the whole, and they contain, in many cases, ingredients that can cause heart damage.
The best remedies I can recommend is a caring and diligent partner, perhaps some meditation and relaxation techniques, yoga, and exercise. (A drastic change in lifestyle, such as diet and exercise can do more to control the diabetes than anything, and safely so.) But, again, consult your doctor before engaging in any diet, exercise program.
Also, be aware that most episodes of ED do pass and things quite often return to 'normal', but it won't happen overnight. I've known some men it took a couple of years to resolve itself with. So don't give up! Keep trying. (A question no one has thought to ask yet, is the ED a fairly constant occurrence, or is it sporadic in nature?) The answer to that question might give the doctor more insight as to the actual cause.

I would still voice caution, Simon, although my instinct is that herbals cannot be any worse than the chemical concoctions that come out of pharmaceutical factories. On the other hand, I recently came across a study that suggested that something as basic as small amounts of oily fish could stop chemotherapy working. Scary when I'd just had a failure on a particular course of chemo and my longevity depended on it - as in "fuck, that sardine may just have done for me".

Agreed that herbs are better than what the pharmaceutical companies are vending to kill us all off, but like you said, research the individual ingredients and cautions about them...L-arginine for instance can cause heart damage even in an otherwise healthy individual and MANY products contain this, including energy drinks! (How many times have I told the kids not to drink that crap? If you eat right, you don't need it!) Same goes for vitamins...they cause cancer and all kinds of side effects. A dear friend of mine, age 60 now, ended up in a doctor's office because he took too much fish oil!!! Vitamins can and will kill you if taken in excess and a lot of people dont bother to research before-hand. More is NOT better. And many Homeopaths believe in order to make it better, you must first make it worse! (This is not my idea of practical medicine.)
There is a book I would recommend highly...Back to Eden...it is a naturalist's 'bible' when it comes to herbal remedies. I don't know if it would mention ED specifically because when it was written, people didnt talk about such things. It does address menopausal maladies though, so maybe...
