ok, i need an answer to a problem, if anyone can help me.
don't get too technical, i'm computer savvy only so far as a simpleton when it comes to software, hardware and peripherals:(

when i got my sky broadband, i was told that since i wanted my pc upstairs, it would be best to get a usb rather than run wires all the way up.

ok. so out i trotted and bought one for about twenty quid.

got it all set up, except the bars (in the bottom screenbar) kept fluctuatingbetween green and grey and i couldn't keep any connection going, no matter what i tried.

so i stripped the download, tried again - same shit.

cleared it out, tried again (and i really don't havae a clue about this sort of stuff, ust followed on-screen instructions) and all i kept getting was a message saying the device wasn't ready, that theredbeen an error in saving to flash file.. stuff like that. and it was meant to be compatible with my system - i checked all that out first. it wasn't netgear, though, but a chinese brand.

i ran a sorts of programmes in the pc, trying to see what the problem could be. now i bought this pc a year ago, secondhand, with no internet connection, and used it to store all my writing. when i ran one programme, i got the message up that my version of Windows XP didn't pass the logo test or something?it said i could be the victim of fraud. oh lord, i feel such a victim (rolls eyes) - well, no,ust annoyed and realised i should have been prepared for that with a secondhand pc off a friend of an aquaintance. sigh.

so, i got a refund on my usb, but no one seems to be able to tell me if it is this 'fault' that might be causing the prolems with trying to upload/use the usb stuff.

Sky told me they didn't think so but weren't sure. the guy who sold me and then refunded me on the usb said i should sort out the Windows XP first but he didn't know.

i can't afford 98 pounds+ for a new OS disk, and want to know if it's worth me spending out 28pounds on a netgear usb and trying again, or if the problem with my pc registration thingy is going to interfere again.

oh come on, someone must have an opinion?

was the post too long and boring so you skipped out on it before finishing?

sigh

Let me get this straight...you ran a USB cable upstairs instead of a Cat 3 or Cat 5 for Broadband?

well.

There you go.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

I dont think the possibility of your copy of XP not being genuine is causing your problem, at one point we had an old comp that had a definitely not genuine copy on it and that could access the internet just fine.

It sounds more like there is a conflict somewhere but without being in front of the machine I cant say more as I'm no expert.

Maybe upstairs is too far away from the wireless router to have a strong connection and you need a booster or better router. Can you move it closer and see if the connection holds?

No, you can get a wireless connection with a usb based setup.

thankyou, peeps :D

no, i didnt run the phone extension upstairs - or Sky didn't - they said it'd be a weaker connection than a usb adapter thingy plugged into my pc upstairs - a 100m range, so easy peasy. but when i couldn't get anything to work with it, i had to bring the pc downstairs into my living room, tried it again, no joy so had to reconnect the ethernet cable to the wireless router for now till i get it sorted.

and THANKYOU mark - that tells me it is worth going out Monday and buying the netgear usb adapter and trying again. hope it bloody works this time

I was hoping I missed something.

All four of ours are hard wired.

My wife still has trouble sometimes connecting with Vista on her laptop.

Use some aluminum foil!

hey partner.. did you turn of your networking card and setup your internet connection so that your computer can discover the usb connection? It sounds like your PC is still trying to surf via the Ethernet card. Youll need to go to network connections and disable the current one. Then go to the device manager and disable your eithernet card. Install any software that came with your new device and run the network wizard. You should be able to handle it from there.

Good news... there's already been a thread about this in the How To section. Very simple solution:

You're welcome.

what i did was put in the cd to set up the wireless router, set up the internet for the first time, then continued to follow the onscreen prompts etc from the set up disk, which included the 'if you got a set-up disk with the usb adapter' (i'm paraphrasing here) 'insert it now and load the software'... all that kind of stuff.

oh, did i unplug the ethernet cable before trying to get the usb set up? if that's what you mean, then yeah, it was part of the onscreen instructions. :D

anyway, i'm going to try again Monday, i think, with a recommended netgear one to see what happens. so thanks for your input.

HOWEVER, i now have a new question if anyone will bear with me.

i was saying this pc keeps showing that the version of Windows in it is not a verifiable copy, blah so the guy who sold it me secondhand maybe did a bit of a dodgy. rummaging through my box of computer stuff in the cupboard, i've found the windows XP disk that came with the last new computer my husband bought before we parted. that pc is no longer operational, since he deliberately broke it. CAN i use this genuine disk to load windows XP into this pc, and - if so - do i need to erase the OS running now? if i do that, will i lose anything inside? files and stuff? lol

and how would i go about wiping this dodgy system before reloading the genuine article?

:confused::confused::confused:

Back up everything you don't want to lose first. Then just boot from the new XP disc and follow the propmts. You might get a message telling you thatthe copy of Windows has been used too many times. If so, call the number, tell them you fried your hard drive and had to install a new one. They'll givce you a new reg key over the phone.

so i don't need to erase the OS in here now first?

if that's the case i'll give it a go. cheers, SeanH
