You are correct, you can not be compelled to do something that you do not want to, for example kill somebody, I will dig out some of my notes on peoples experiences. I also know of some videos if any body is interested

So haurni you have you tried it? It doesn't work for everybody, and one has to be relaxed, and accept what is suggested to them. It certainly is not a form of Role Play, but one can use it to play, I understand that it is possible to put some one under by the printed word, or while chatting on say Yahoo, also by video, or Audio. I can dig out some vids, or how its done by the written word if any body is interested. I f somebody is to shy PM me, I don't bite unless asked to.

There are a variety of theories on hypnosis, one of which assumes that the social setting 'allows' or gives one licence to participate in unusual behaviour - that one is expected to 'play the role' of the obedient subject and so one does. As there's quite a bit of disagreement about how it works, I'm by no means saying that this is the true explanation, only that it's one of them. People have been going into altered states of one sort or another for thousands if not tens of thousands of years by various means and I'd be the last person to deny that such things are possible.

That being said, I've tried hypnosis as a subject in both clinical and stage settings and didn't feel any different than normal (aside from being relaxed in the former instance). This is interesting to me because people with vivid imaginations and a tendency to fantasy (such as myself) are supposed to be more hypnotizable.

I have had a the experience of being hypnotized at a public show.

Hypnotism, in my opinion, is all about willing suggestibility. A subject must be very suggestible. That is, they are able to accept suggestions from another person and do what they are being told to do. This generally requires a willingness to submit to the will of another. I think it's impossible to be hypnotized against one's will.

Also, one is aware of what is going on at the time. The hypnotist must reinforce that the subject relax and listen and accept the suggestions repeatedly. This can become quite powerful, but it must be gradual and the subject must feel at ease. I do not think you could make someone do something that they are opposed to doing. But a skilled hypnotist could relax a willing subject so much that they might be able to frame some act in a way that the subject is not opposed to. I don't know if that makes sense.

It is very dependent on the skill of the hypnotist and the willingness, suggestibility and mood of the subject, which vary a lot. A performing hypnotist will often test an entire audience with a few simple suggestions and then select a group that are most suggestible. He will continue to test and refine the group until he has subjects who are very suggestible and uninhibited.
