Another Lonely Night

Darren Andrews

They parked in a car-park in the town center and walked toghether, arm in arm, hand in hand, through the town of Niagara Falls, chatting and browsing, simply enjoying one another's company. Both seemed a little nervous, but it was the nervousness of wanting to please, of moving into a more committed relationship.

Darren wondered just what she would like, and spent much of his time rolling the memories of their conversations and her chatchies over in his mind. A stuffy? Something more solid to show a solid commitment? He so wanted to show her what he thought about her.

Eventually he found what he was looking for - a shop called Artisans Alley, selling all manner of items from stonewear to toys and games, all craftsman-made.

"Lets go in," he said, "buy a couple of things for each other. We can put them on my charge. Like I say, it's not going to be much use to us soon, so we might as well use it now. We can share them while we eat."

They split up inside the shop, each going to different sections to find something to show just how they felt about one another. Then, eventually, returned to the counter together. Darren had 3 items: a decorative travel clock, a rose-red heart carved of glass, and a small hand-mirror set in a crystal-geode surround. He lay them on the counter and waited for her, smiling as he thought about explaining the gifts over the picnic.

Bethany (Beth)

Beth’s hand remained in Darren’s as they walked through the town. Somehow they found all manner of things to discuss, the things they saw, and the people around them, the town itself. At times she found nervousness in their speech, but they seemed to catch themselves and smiled at their foolishness, both eager to make the other feel valued.

Beth looked intrigued as Darren led her through a side street to stop outside a curious looking shop called Artisans Alley. She looked through the window at the array of objects for sale. She had never seen such a range of items under one roof.

"Lets go in, buy a couple of things for each other.”
Beth looked up intrigued by the idea.
“We can put them on my charge. Like I say, it's not going to be much use to us soon, so we might as well use it now. We can share them while we eat."

Eager to explore the shop and to find something suitable for Darren, Beth moved away from him and began to examine the goods set out on shelves, tables and cupboards.

Never had she seen such a clutter of objects. At ease, she browsed, picking up objects, running her fingers over them, enjoying the chance to pick out anything she wished and wanting to find something suitable, something meaningful.

One item, she found almost immediately, the second took some searching. She had almost given up hope of finding something just right, when there it was. She had two objects and was equally pleased with both her choices.

At the counter, she placed a small box upon the counter and a larger bulky package. Looking at them, it was not apparent what they were. As the assistant added up the cost, he merely wrote down the item number and price, the description of the objects was not revealed.

She smiled mischievously at Darren.

“Did you get what you wanted?”

Darren looking over at Beth saw the excitement in her eyes. They smiled sharing the same anticipation, wondering what the other would think of their choices.

The objects were quickly paid for.
They hurried out of the shop, eager to go eat and share their purchases.

OOC: Sorry, rushing to summer school, only have time for a short update atm.

IC: They had passed a delicatessen on the way to Artisan's Alley, and that was where they stopped to pick up something for lunch: homemade bread steamed gently in the back room, cooling to be placed on shelves, meats and vegetables lined a counter at the front, providing all the selections they'd need for sandwiches. Soda, water, buns and cakes, topped off the shop's display, and within minutes the pair were walking out, carrying bags full of food.

They made their way to the falls quickly finding a picnic area providing a beautiful sight of the majesty of nature they had first see when they had arrived. Darren glanced at Beth, wondering if he caught a smile of memory at his comments. It was somewhat difficult finding a quiet area to sit, away from the worst of the crowds, but eventually they did. He lay down a blanket he kept in the car for them to sit on and helped Beth to sit down. Ever the gentleman, ever trying to impress her. He handed her her bag of food and sat beside her.

Beth

Beth giggled with Darren as they loaded up a basket, buying far more than they could eat. They left the delicatessen loaded down with food and drink and made their way away from the shops and to the picnic area.

Beth let her hand rest once more in Darren's as he picked his way through the crowds and finally found a more secluded spot. They exchanged a look as each seemed to remember sharing the site of the falls the day before. Beth smiled, realising he must certainly know his way around this place and was pleased he had chosen to share it with her.

Darren set out the rug and gestured for Beth lower herself onto the blanket and make herself comfortable. Sitting down she stretched luxuriously, giving a sigh of contentment. Sitting up once again, Beth took the bag of food that Darren handed to her. Her smile when she locked glances with him again was warm. He made her feel special and seemed to want to take care of her. Each step of their friendship and developping relationship was so new to her. No one had ever treated her witht he care and respect that Darren did.

Darren seated himself beside her and watched as she rummaged through the bag. Beth grinned as she began to unpack the food and set it out on the blanket. With a look of mischief she bit a mouthful and giggled at him.

She marvelled that she could act so naturally. Gone was the girl who ran with the crowd and was all image. She realised for the first time that she was wearing no makeup and wondered when she had last gone out without her " face"?

"MMmmmm... it's perfect here. Just like a real holiday, Darren."
She breathed happily, looking round at the passersby.

Taking another hungry bite, she grinned.

"Heaven... "

She exchanged a playful look as he too bit into the food.

They sat looking round, enjoying being together and sharing their picnic.

To Beth, the cares of the world seemed miles away. No one could get to her here, there once no one to judge her, no one to harm her.

She gave another sigh of contentment and plunged into the goodies once more.

It was simply fun relaxing with Beth as we ate what we had bought, stuffing ourselves beyond what either of us would be comfortable with. We laughed and joked, both feeling the warmth of the afternoon, and the coolness of the breeze from the falls, washing over us like a cleansing bath. I still could not believe so much had happened in just three days. It seemed barely credible.

And then we had eaten our fill, and relaxed together, holding one another, kissing, watching the falls and the people passing by. A lazy, sweet time to savor. Romantic. That was the perfect word for this. Truly romantic, and in that spirit, I reached for my bag of goodies and withdrew the carved glass heart.

"I can't think of any other way to put this, Beth, but you have my heart." I smiled as I handed her it. "This is just an ornament, and maybe we haven't know each other long enough for me to make a statement like that. Well, I'm sorry, but you do. I love you, and I'd do anything to protect you. I'm giving you this as a token way of saying I really am entrusting you with my heart, Beth, and if you remember me in the cafe, you'll remember I wasn't much for even trusting myself, let alone someone else. Besides, I've only known you for three days, but I feel like I've been waiting for you for all my life."

Beth

Beth looked in suprise at the demolished bags of food. They had eaten so much more than they should, more than they needed, but it had been so good, tasting, teasing, chatting, kissing ... just being together.

She looked over at Darren tenderly as he gathered together the leftovers and placed them once more into a bag.

Darren turned from the bag and Beth realised he had been rummaging in the bag of gifts.
He held out an object to her.
As Beth's hands closed carefully around it, she realised he had bought her an exquisitely carved glass heart.
She ran her hands over it lightly, lovingly as Darren spoke.

"I can't think of any other way to put this, Beth, but you have my heart."

She smiled shyly at him.

Beth looked up at Darren, tears in her eyes.

"Oh Darren.. that's beautiful.. this is beautiful..."

She reached over and kissed him lightly, but passionately on the mouth.

As she drew away, she looked intensely into his eyes.

"Glass needs cherishing, it's so fragile Darren... I'll never break your heart.. and... I'll cherish you... "

She held his gaze, hoping he would realise how sincerely she wanted to be with him, how much she wanted him to trust that she would never hurt him.

".. and I have a gift for you Darren... "

She spoke softly, drawing away from him to rummage in the bag...
