Another dud. I am too critical, I think.

After discussion on film tastes

Him: I forget...is your major philosophy?

Me: No, Poli Sci. Why?

Him: Oh. I figured it would be philosophy. You like to think.

Me:....*disbelieving chuckle* what?

Him: You like films that make you think.

Me: Oh well, sometimes, yes but--

Him: I don't really see the point in sub-title films. I don't like to read when I go to the movies.

(pause)

Me: *nods silently*

Him: I mean if I'm going to read, might as well get a book right? *laughs*

Me: Right. Same thing.

Him: Not that I'm a big reader. I'm done with that thank god, now that I'm a working man.

Me: Of course.

Him: Not that I mind reading, I know you like it. Have you ever read the Da Vinci Code? That was fucking great and pretty important.

Me: So when are we gonna see the movie?

Ignoring gender for the moment, I'd be calling for the check and looking for the exit at that point.

I once dated a girl who would be perfect for him. She said she didn't like reading, except for magazine articles because they were 'short, but very informative.'

the problem I have with sub-titles is that I can get so caught up in trying to read the dialogue that I can't always pay attention to what's actually happening on the screen. maybe I need to take a speed-reading class.

that's what I should have said.... sorry I was a dud.

I hate sub-titled movies myself.

I love reading books, but movies I enjoy watching.

Most of the time I'd rather watch a subtitled movie than a dubbed one, though. If the movie's good enough, I don't mind reading.

Da Vinci Code? No, you're not too critical. Run.

He went on for one minute too long about how it was an "important" novel of our times and shaked the Vatican's foundations. Or something like that. I zoned out after he said "Da Vinci Code".

We still had a movie to see. I couldn't think of a graceful way to back out of it. Sigh.

I usually rent sub-titled movies and watch them twice, first for the dialogue, then in the second viewing I can just relax and enjoy the movie because I know what is happening.

I have to be in the mood for subtitles. If I'm tired and want total escapism, I don't want to read a movie.

what does he think about Harry Potter? lol

Nestles milk chocolate pieces and good buttered popcorn is my fave....little of each in a bite.

That response makes baby Jesus cry. She and my dud should hook up.

Heh. I find that response acceptable even if it still makes me squirm a bit. I simply find it effortless so it's difficult to understand why it requires such an effort from others (as it seems to, judging the responses in this thread).

That wasn't my only issue though. His implication that there is no point to watching films in subtitles merely because he doesn't like to read sent off all kinds of alarm bells. Also the assertion that if one likes to think one must be into something "deep" like philosophy.

What.the.fuck? Seriously. WTF? That's the last time I let any friends hook me up.

There's more to life than graceful exits. Just sayin'

I hand out a survey to potential dates. On it I ask if they liked the Da Vinci Code. If they say yes then I go shopping. Why waste a night on a useless date?

The mythology of our times; Rowling is the new Homer.

And you know it wasn't so much the fact that he didn't read much--I have friends who aren't big readers but are very intelligent, curious sorts, they simply channel it differently. That's fine. But his reasons and explanations for it hurt my brain. Oh, they hurt my brain.

Misery does like company. I'd be all for it. For some reason I always get the weirdos.
