Awhile ago i was given assignment by my Domme to read the "Sleeping Beauty" series by Ann Rice, a three piece work of fine literature. For some strange reason i just remembered the series and how much i enjoyed it, though for me it felt too extreme of a thing to do at a personal level, though i am sure there are those out there where the book is a real life fantasy.

The books did great in giving a great view on a D/s lifestyle--as well as some interesting ideas--and gave me, as a new submissive at the time, a better handle on true submission/slavery.

Just out of curiousity, how many here have read the series and what did you think of it?

And if you haven't read it, i highly suggest it.

Anne with an E on the end, by the way. (I'm a pedant!)

I've read the middle book. I found the writing style... a little strained. And the male slavery and all the humiliation didn't do much for me. On the other hand, there were certainly parts that DID do things for me! So... a mixed bag here.

Let's just say that I enjoyed it more than the Story of O.

If you want another fun fantasy sexy romp, try reading War Of The Powers.

Reading the Sleeping Beauty books was the thing that caused me to accept the fact that I'm kinky. At first, I was appalled that I was so aroused by some of it and then I thought.... I gotta try some of that! LOL.

It was a huge influence on me. The first few chapters anyway. After that, it got a little wild.

I read the first volume of the trilogy.

At first, it felt like a fluff story, but as I read further and deeper, I found it very interesting and thought provoking.

My favorite scene, and the point at which I had an "Aha" moment was when Sleeping Beauty was playing the game in the queen's chambers. After picking up all of the rose petals (if that is what they were), her kissing hte foot of the Lady who had taunted her and spanked her.

It really rang true and made me think about submission more deeply.

I read the books years ago. Many of the scenes are deeply imbedded in my mind:p

Was not expecting much when i came across the first but ended up reading all three.

Need I say more?;)

I just look at the Sleeping Beauty Books as interesting kinky porn.

Very nice, but still fiction.

I read them, but would only recommend them to someone already involved and experienced in the lifestyle, not to a "newbie" to gain "insight" because I feel there is a serious lack of any valid insight in these books.

They were a great read for entertainment value, but beyound that, the trilogy was over-written, over-dramatic, and at many times, downright silly. I actually never did finish the 3rd book. I think they would have been MUCH better as a series of short stories, only ease up on some of the flowery descriptions. Less is more, in this case.

But alas, I did enjoy reading them for the most part.

Yes, I read them. Liked the 2nd book best. They were great one handed reading material, but I didn't find them representative of this lifestyle.

I bought the entire trilogy because I had heard so much about them. I got through most of the first book before I just had to put it down. As FungiUg states: it was better than "The Story of O." Though by how much is debatable. I also felt the writing quality was simply "off". Like Rice almost knew most of her readers would be so taken with the subject in general, that she really didn't have to work at quality. Eh, it was the first Anne Rice book I ever read, and not sure if I'll read another.

Oh, by the way, I managed to send all three books to a member here at Lit who had lost hers. So at least my boredom turned into a good for her.

I read it years ago only because I was reading all her books. At the time I hadn't heard of bdsm. "The Witching Hour" is probably my favorite. Don't judge her by the beauty series.

But is has made her a lot of money.

I've heard quite a bit about "The Witching Hour", so I might take a chance. Perhaps some one I know has it and will loan it to me. Who knows? I might come to appreciate her writing!

They were fantasy; just like her kinky book Exit to Eden. I never thought that anyone actually lived that way. Fun to read, though and a big personal eye opener in terms of my own desires.

Roquelaure Reader

before you give up on the Trilogy, ohhhh read the Roquelaure Reader... by Katherine Ramsland, it's a biographical discussion of Anne Rice's erotica

sooooo insightful ~~ i cannot imagine ANYONE coming away from her work with anything but AWE after reading this!

i will admit that i did read the entire vampire series...and i liked it..but i feel very very dirty for it... thier's some weird erotisim in that book...

i also read a book of hers called "cry to heaven" which is basicly male on male eunic porn....or maybe sexual male on everything but animal eunic porn... i dunno..i did fine it arrouseing..but i can't always tell you why....

sure did turn my face red when i read it though..i was like 14....my mother had no idea what was in the boook...i sure as hell didn't either... i think i ended up giving it to a gay guy i was friends with ...

I found Exit to Eden (the book) so erotic and fun! You can tell she really gets off on New Orleans and the various places around the French quarter. The island scenes were captivating. I wrote her a fan letter. She didn't answer. I don't blame her.

I am with you on this. I loved 'The Witching Hour' and still have it, tattered as it is. Have to see where some of her inspiration comes from when you see her house...is almost the house from the book from what I have seen.

It's an awesome book- the Mayflower trilogy is my favorite out of Anne Rice's books.

I found her Sleeping Beauty series entertaining, and as a couple of people have mentioned, some of it did nothing for me, and some of it turned me on. I found most of it interesting though.

I read all three and enjoyed them. If you enjoy Anne Rice and are a kinkster I would say they are a must read.

Found mine in a bookstore and recently saw them again in The American Bookshop in Amsterdam.....perhaps you need to order them...as an afterthought, they are actually published and written under her other pen name A. N. Roquelaure, so perhaps you saw them and didn't realise they were the Ann Rice books.

books

I did read the Beauty series, some parts turned me on, other parts I found just plain silly. I wasn't so impressed with them, ended up tossing them when I moved.

But I did just finish reading the Kushiel series (Dart, Chosen, Avatar) and I liked them much more. There was plot and character and stuff to go along with the kink. Some of the writing style of these seemed goofy, too, but I've never been much of a romance novel reader.

I'd recommmend them, maybe as a library visit before a purchase.
