And the Bitch is gone....an exercise in writing.

South, South I tramped. The winds at night got a little warmer; Each day's journey saw Spring burgeoning around me, from the sere fallow woods of the lands i was leaving. South, always, my shadow swinging across my path as each day progressed. Each morning saw the pale sunrise colors, the rich bloody hues of the setting sun, and the greens of summer came clearer and clearer, birds now singing the songs of territory and mating all around me. I saw my first citrus tree- some tiny dark orange fruit it was, with a sweet rind and sour flesh. I plucked a double handful and ate hungrily of the flavor of home.

And then- from the South- came that long-remembered tang in the air. It filled my nostrils, filled my lungs, filled my heart with home. In just a few days more journey the land around me was lifting into the high hills that presaged the final descent, the grass had become the hardier saw-blades that can abide the salt.

I saw the sparkle of the ocean, reflected in the hazy air, before i saw its blue waters. My travel-hardened limbs raced across the hillside meadow, and I only paused for an instant to look down the slope, before I was running, nearly out of balance, and why I didn't end up rolling the rest of the way is a mystery to me.

The wide, white sands, welcomed me. Under a sweet warm breeze, warmed by the Sun of my childhood, I shucked my pack, my clothing, the last remnants of my Northern life, and ran into the softly rolling breakers of the Mediterranean.

Funny how it became about the journey and not about the ocean itself.

Now that I look back on it, I did the same with the trip to the snowy forest.

Well, okay then. I finally tried! I have no idea where this all came from, and I think I may have strayed off-topic, but it really can’t be helped.

North.

The sound of the snow crunching under my boots is the only one I can hear, the only one I have heard during the past few hours. There is no wind at all, nor any form of life around me, and the white blanket of snow before me is fresh and undisturbed, like an empty canvas. It is peaceful, yet at the same time eerily so, and I catch myself holding my breath waiting for something to happen. Anything. But nothing disturbs my solitude as I trudge on, making my way through the tall, dark trees towards my unknown destination. I should feel threatened by the large branches looming over me as I pass, but I don’t. All of them are covered in a thin layer of ice crystals, sparkling as a rare sunray catches them just right.

I exhale, and my vision clouds momentarily as the icy air turns my breath into a thin, white fog. When it clears, he is standing there, under a tree, in the spot I could swear was empty just a moment ago. His deep green eyes are fixated on me as he remains completely motionless, as if waiting for something. His face is devoid of any expression.

You’re late, I want to say, but the words never make their way out of my throat. A rapid movement catches my attention, a red flash that makes its way from a nearby tree to his feet. The squirrel sits and ogles him curiously, tail twitching. And then the forest begins to live.

I start to hear the tiniest noises, a small branch breaking, something burrowing, hooves breaking through the snow crust, while the snow around his feet suddenly begins to melt with astonishing speed. Heat radiates out from him, and my hair is caught in the sudden, gentle breeze that warms my frozen skin. The trees around me come to life and shake off the excess snow on their branches while carefully sprouting their first, tender greens. Within seconds, there is not a flash of white in sight, but everything has been colored in tones of brown and green, and the previously empty forest is now the busiest place. I hear the twitter of birds, a welcome sound I had to do without for far too long.

He watches patiently as I look around, my eyes wide with astonishment and awe. I take a few moments to take off my gloves and unbutton my winter coat, enjoying the newfound warmth. The squirrel to his feet makes a few nimble jumps and then vanishes up a tree, doing whatever it is squirrels do first when the winter is over.

I look up at him and say a single word.

"Thanks."

And then, finally, his face breaks into an ever-so-slight smile.

wonderful Jen, thank you for adding to the mix....North seems to be popular as well as South.

Anyone going East or West?

Bump (& Grind)

I dug through and found the one I did for this.
It still makes me smile.
Anyone that hasn't participated yet should give it a go.

Total doorknob.
I'd be tormented, perhaps, if I wasn't home with sick kids today.
As it is I'll just wait, though it would be good to hear from you anyhow.
How long's it been?
Hell, you could even put it into a Bitch Is Gone story...
