In 1938 the vast majority of Germans were clearly able to identify what was particular about the society of the Third Reich versus the previous Weimar Republic. Interviews with Germans mostly contained statements of a 'new' and 'better' Germany. The economy was vastly improved. Young people were getting off the streets. A sense of community was palpable. The isidious changes were not so obvious. People did not appreciate that they needed a new code of reality.

Americans are, largely, equally unaware of the creeping influences of 'the state.'

History is repetitive.

We could be fucked!

You seem to have no problems living in China though.

History is always something new. What people say about history is repetitive. Same goes for lit posts.

Germany is a country with a government. The US is a country with a government.

Watch out!

So what's your point? That Obama is equivalent to Hitler? jeninflorida might be impressed with that point. Unfortunately, it keeps normal people from taking you seriously.

But you're not unaware, China Bandit!

You should tell somebody so that we can be aware!!

Then we'll show that mean ol' government!!!

History is not repetitive in details, but there are certain tendencies that do reoccur because they are part of human nature.

In the case of the US today, though, I think we're entering into a whole new realm of tyranny. Germany didn't claim to be a free country and a democracy under Hitler. Just the opposite. Here, people are duped into thinking they are free so long as they can watch their porn and their R-rated movies on cable, get drunk, and have gay orgies. That's the new definition of "freedom." Meanwhile real freedom is taken away and people don't even see it, or don't want to see it.

And China is a government with a country! [rimshot]

Any comparison to China is deflection. The CCP is just another dynasty in a land that has known nothing but dynastic rule. If anything, today's CCP is a far improved dynasty due to the allowance of greater economic freedom AND international mobility. Have you paid any attention to the amount of US real estate being purchased by PRC citizens...

No. Where are they buying it, mostly?

Everywhere, from burned out Detroit to downtown SF.

There are too many articles about it to post a single, definitive, link.

Google "Chinese buying US real estate" or anything comparable.

Cheers.

There is your absolute proof. Every generation believes that it is different, it is evolved, that history is nice, but humanity is about to enter a new paradigm in which the cycle of tyranny will be forever broken under government as they imagine it will turn out thanks to their good and humble intentions.

In short, to the modern Liberal, as was with the German Socialistic movement, history is what was before they came along and changed the world and you are an idiot for choosing history over them. Why back then, they actually had to communicate using landlines...

;) ;)

History was pretty bad in a lot of ways though, you've got to admit.
