America has Labor Day, and Labour Party, UK has Jeremy Corbyn.

Thankfully, America also has Wonkette-

We didn’t want no commie/socialist May Day holiday, so Grover Cleveland signed the September Labor Day holiday into law shortly after federal troops killed 30 people while breaking up the Pullman Strike in 1894.

The US celebrates Labor Day because of a bloody clash over 100 years ago that left 30 people dead and cost $80 million in damages

The Pullman Company hawked an aspirational product: luxury rail cars.

Company Town, Company store-

Then the disastrous economic depression of the 1890s struck. Pullman made a decision to cut costs — by lowering wages.

The workers ultimately launched a strike on May 11, 1894, receiving support from the American Railway Union.

The tension then escalated when Eugene Debs, president of the nationwide American Railroad Union (ARU), declared that ARU members would no longer work on trains that included Pullman cars.

125,000 workers across 29 railroad companies quit their jobs rather than break the boycott.

Pro-labor Illinois governor John Peter Altgeld refused to authorize President Cleveland to send in federal troops, asserting that allegations of societal breakdown had been grossly exaggerated. But the federal government ultimately sent in soldiers to enforce the injunction.

The General Managers Association was a group which represented 26 Chicago railroad companies-

The General Managers Association was able to deputize federal marshals to help put down the strike.

30 people died in the chaos. The riots and sabotage caused by the strike ultimately cost $80 million in damages.

Here is Trump’s Labor Day message compared to Obama’s

Donald Trump’s first Labor Day message as president has underlined his campiagn pledge to help American workers, taking a different tack from that of his predecessor Barack Obama.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump wrote: “We are building our future with American hands, American labor, American iron, aluminum and steel. Happy ‪#LaborDay!” also sharing a picture of himself and his wife Melania waving.

“Today, America celebrates the grit and resilience of working families. Happy ‪#LaborDay,” Obama wrote.

The former president’s 2016 message also praised the hard work of Americans, encouraging people to keep going. However, it also focused on the government’s success in tackling unemployment.

“Happy Labor Day - longest streak of job growth ever, unemployment cut in half. That's what hardworking Americans can do. Let's keep going!” Obama wrote in 2016, in his final Twitter post on Labor Day as president.

Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)

June 1924, the KKK, joined by men from the US Navy, attacked an IWW hall in San Pedro, California, during a benefit for two workers killed in a railroad accident. They beat up many in the crowd of 300, tarred and feathered several union leaders, and beat Lizzie Sundstedt, a mother of three, so badly that two months later she died of her injuries. Sundstedt had been trying to protect her two daughters and another boy; the attackers got past her and threw boiling coffee on the children. Her oldest daughter, Mae, 12, was photographed in the hospital, suffering burns from the waist down-

Mae’s injuries were so bad that when her mother died, two months later, she had to be brought to the funeral on a stretcher.

We have a president who seems to long for the good old days when labor unrest — even hints of it — could be crushed by calling out the militia, or the Pinkertons.

"Taxes too high, wages too high, we’re not going to be able to compete against the world,” Trump said. “I hate to say it, but we have to leave [the minimum wage] the way it is."

Bernie Sanders spoke up for wage earners-

"This is a guy (Trump) who does not want to raise minimum wage,” he said of Trump. “In fact, he has said that wages in America are too high.”

Trump lashed back at Sanders, tweeting: “[Bernie Sanders]–who blew his campaign when he gave Hillary a pass on her e-mail crime, said that I feel wages in America are too high. Lie!”

But on Fox News’ “Special Report” Thursday he insisted that he never said wages were too high, just that the minimum wage should not increase.

“I didn’t say that."
