America held hostage Part Deux

Hey O, glad to see you're feeling better! :rose:

That was an absolutely brilliant post, especially your explanation of the situation of immigrant labor, but I have a few things I wanted to address... "a law that prohibits corporations from exporting jobs when the exportation of jobs is not necessary to the survival of X corporation" is dangerous, IMHO because anything can be arbitrarily declared "necessary". I see no necessity at all for these companies to go overseas to produce products made for Americans.

This is a good point. The Shrub administration is infamous for allowing the twisting of words and definitions. What I meant by necessity is that the company would go bankrupt unless it exported jobs. However, now that I give it more thought I'd say that any company which cannot survive without exporting should just go under. That may sound harsh, but if the company isn't successful then it isn't successful. Exporting jobs would only serve to allow it to survive solely on international exploitation.

As for immigrants the only way to ensure their safety is to crack down hard on employers for paying them sub minimum wages and presenting them with dangerous work environments.

I agree. That is why the the UFW (United Farm Workers) is so important :)

As for getting our governments to respond? Blah... when was the last time you saw a politician that did what the people wanted? We have to find ways to disrupt the system legally. Boycotts fueled by information campaigns, can do a LOT of damage, I think.

Well, people will just have to try to wear this administration down, and the next one, too (regardless of whether it's shrub or kerry, since they're both the same anyway).

Exactly. I'm not sure why anyone sees the Democrats or the Republicans as the better choice any more.

It's all about issues, not parties.. parties are owned by corporate money, and will never do right by the people.

Get enough people to act and the Government will finally start to listen. [/B][/QUOTE]

One thing that does surprise me about the states is that we are so far behind when it comes to Employee rights and conditions.

The right wing takes THIS way too far.

Business is the focus here but its CHEAPER goods that drive this to an extreme. Just to make something a few bucks less they build it in Mexico or China.

Granted that's the job of a corporation, to show it's shareholders good profitability.

I believe there needs to be a balance though and I wish our society wasn't so darn preoccupied with saving a few bucks!!
I'd much rather pay more and have a society with a decent min wage, I.E. $12/hr and also more goods built here.

BUT human nature being human nature, if there's a cheaper product from O/S we'll buy it.

As long as we buy these imported goods I'm afraid were stuck with the problem.

I have spent years living in Australia which probably has the best working conditions in the world. Min 4 weeks a year and cost of living increases regularly.
Wish it was that way here.
