Amelia's "Good Stuff That Comes On PBS" Thread

oh yes! it was excellent. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye out for the next time it comes on.

Seconded. I really liked it.

I love PBS here is Seattle. Love George.

The best comedy shows ever IMHO are
Faulty Towers and Yes Minister, both British.

Great concerts too.:)

I just watched it. Really cool. Probably the best explanation of string theory in laymen's terms that I've heard.

You're far too hot to be considered a geek. And you know too much about the Sopranos to be a nerd. :|

*puts on chap stick* That concludes this session of kissing Amelia's ass.

I know it's not PBS...

But TLC had a good "Mummy Detectives" on tonight.

All about the Bible and the time frames of Jesus' birth, and the Star of Bethlehem (Jupiter) leading wise men...

Lots of interesting facts about mistakes in translations and time frames - and the real Three Kings.

Good show.

Austin City Limits celebrates 30 years on television this fall. It's still America's favorite place to see roots music from blues to rock, swing to country. The series airs in a time slot determined by your local PBS station. Check local listings.

Wilco followed by Bright Eyes (1/8/2005)
Trey Anastasio (1/15/2005)
Modest Mouse followed by Guided By Voices (1/22/2005)
The Pixies (1/29/2005)

I caught a portion of Othello the other night, a more contemporary version with Eamonn Walker in the lead role.

Not bad at all.

I havent respected TLC for the longest time based on the unscientific approaches of biblical "archeologists" in thier numerous specials relating to topics thereto.

You mean Clooney, Marky Mark & Ice Cube weren't the real 3 kings??

I liked the version Kenneth Branagh did in the 90's with Laurence Fishburne, but I thought Eamonn Walker had more presence than the Fish.

Keep watch for this. It's on during the fund drive, so that's a pain, and it's not really scheduled, but it's worth it if you can catch it. This guy was alone in Alaska for over thirty years.

Alone in the Wilderness is the documentry of Richard Proenneke, the subject of the book One Man's Wilderness: an Alaskan Odyssey . Richard Proenneke built his own cabin in the wilderness near Twin Lakes, in what is now Lake Clark National Park & Preserve.

Richard Proenneke lived the dream of building a cabin in the Alaskan wilderness, and stayed to become a part of the country. This program is a simple account of the day-to-day explorations and activities he carried out alone, and the constant chain of nature's events that kept him company.

Modest Mouse was on ACL tonight. I thought they did a really great job. It brought back the fun memories of when I saw them in September.

next week, THE PIXIES!

the pixies were excellent. i really hope they do some new stuff soon.

Modest Mouse's performance was OK. It lacked any real vitality and the current mix of band members is awkward. The trio is now six with one too many drummers, a shitty backup singer, and a guitarist that makes a good 4th(original member way back in the day). For my money they need to cut the size down and find some urgency or passion.

The new songs felt flat on ACL and they ignored any older ones. Little bit too rock-star-detached for my liking. They were far better when I saw them here. I'm to the point where I dont much like the new songs.

Looking forward to the Pixies. As terrible as they were on Letterman they were fucking kick-ass live when I saw them. Especially the two nearly forgotten members.

Wow Austin City limits has been changing. It used to be older bands when I was a kid, I am going to have to check it out again.

I met Trey Anastasio once. :D

FYI:

The upcoming Frontline is all about the evolution of Credit Cards as the leading money maker for banks.

I enjoyed the show, but then, that's the first "live" performance of theirs I've seen. I am very much looking forward to the Pixies.

Tonight on NOVA

Nova
Treasures of a Sunken City
Tuesday, February 1, 8:00pm

Few traces remain of Alexandria, once the capital of Egypt, which for centuries was the jewel of the Mediterranean, home of Cleopatra and Marc Anthony. Earthquakes turned the city to rubble and, along with one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Lighthouse, much of it sank into the sea. Now, NOVA dives below the surface to transport viewers into a watery graveyard of sunken archaeological treasures, including a giant sphinx from 30 B.C. Amazing underwater photography combined with new techniques in computer graphics reveals the ancient wonders of this lost city.

Very cool.

And the program after it was about StoneHenge. Very interesting too.
