I have a few ads posted here and there because we are looking for a dog to adopt.. I recieved this e-mail reply today. If the world is going global, it looks like there may be a communication problem. One version of the Immigration reform bill says if you're going to live in America, learn the language. They do that in Europe, we should do it too.

raiesd with a cat and childres, is 4 month old. Plaufull all puppy shouts, dewormed, and available. We are in Collegeville,
no pics to email though.
When would you like to come see her?
thanks~

Terrible.

Of course, "recieved" isn't any gem, either. ;)

It's more difficult to learn to write it than it is to speak it. At least give the fucking people respect for trying.

I have to apologise, I was trying to work out what was on offer.

I don't know how I managed that,I know that one. i before e except after c, etc. The one I never remember is 'Definitely', which happens to be the most mispelled word, so they say.

"Misspelled" is one, too. :D

You say this like immigrants are the only ones with shitty english writing.

I don't think I will, given the fact AOL mail has a built in spell checker and it was in reference to a business deal. I always found writing easier than speaking in a different language.

You should. Your spelling is no prize pig, either. Who are you to judge?

You've already screwed up "received" and "misspelled" in this thread alone.

It's probably bullshit anyway. Pretty convenient that he gets something like this just as the immigration thing is all over the board.

Right , I've got nothing better to do than make up threads about spelling for a few days in a row.BTW~ 'the immigration thing' is nothing new, it has been an issue for years. I think it is probably more a literacy issue than immigration. Generally the literacy level in the native language is reflected in how well you spell in the second language***

I made up all these classified ads with bad spelling too

***"Alison Holm, Barbara Dodd (1996) The effect of first written language On the acquisition of English literacy Cognition
The relationship between first and second language literacy was examined by identifying the skills and processes developed in the first language that were transferred to the second language. The performance of 40 university students from the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Australia were compared on a series of tasks that assessed phonological awareness and reading and spelling skills in English. The results indicated that the Hong Kong students (with non-alphabetic first language literacy) had limited phonological awareness compared to those students with alphabetic first language literacy. The reading and spelling tasks showed no differences between the groups on real word processing. However, the students from Hong Kong had difficulty processing non-words because of their poor phonological awareness. The results supported the hypothesis that people learning English as a Second language (ESL) transfer their literacy processing skills from their first language to English. When the phonological awareness required in English had not been developed in the first language, ESL students were limited to a whole-word visual strategy. The findings indicate that students from non-alphabetic written language backgrounds face difficulties with new, or unfamiliar words when attending universities where English is the medium of instruction.

Which freaking one do you think?? 97% of US citizens speak English. English is the official language in Alabama, California, Florida, New Hampshire and Oregon.

Main article: Languages in the United States
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States#Language
The United States has no official language, but English is the most widely spoken language, spoken by nearly all of American citizens. 97% of Americans speak English well or very well. There have been moves in the past for English to be named as the official language of the United States, but this has been a major political issue for a good part of the country's existence. Some states, such as Alabama, California, Florida, New Hampshire and Oregon have made English the official language at the state level, but there still is strong resistance at the national level.

The whole thread is about spelling, dumbass.
Wrong, it is about communication. I never mentioned spelling when I posted the thread. I said:

Very often terrible thing happen because people live and work in the US but do not bother learning English. For Example:
Of course, there are also nonmonetary costs associated with a multilingual America. These expenses often have a human cost.
A 22-year-old immigrant won a $71 million settlement because a group of paramedics and doctors misdiagnosed a blood clot in his brain. The man's relatives used the Spanish word intoxicado to describe his ailment. They meant he was nauseated, but the translator interpreted the word to mean intoxicated.
Six children were killed when a loose tailgate from a tractor trailer fell off on a Milwaukee highway. The driver of the family's SUV could not avoid the tailgate, which punctured the gas tank and caused the vehicle to explode. An investigation found that other truckers had tried to warn the driver of the tractor trailer about his loose tailgate, but the driver did not understand English.
An immigrant in Orange County, California, died from a fall into a 175-degree vat of chemicals at an Anaheim metal-plating shop. Though the company's instructions clearly forbade walking on the five-inch rail between tanks, they were printed in English, a language that the worker did not understand. An inquiry into the accident found that many of the recent hires were not proficient in English.
Hispanics accounted for nearly one-third of Georgia's workplace deaths in 2000, despite making up only 5.3 percent of the state's population. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a branch of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, blamed "misunderstandings arising from language barriers" for the deaths and said they "could be prevented and don't have to happen."
