I'm not really sure what there is to understand. He's attracted to men? Got it. Understood. Is he talking about empathy for any social wrongs done to gay men? Okay, got that too. It's not right. Across the board acceptance of homosexuality is never going to happen. People are going to have to live with merely having tolerance where they can find it.
I agree with Dr. M on the idea of wanting understand others, regardless of what sub-group they are broken down in. Maybe that's just the writer in me, but I'm interested in motivations and backgrounds.

It seems to me that the request he is making is not actually about understanding but a euphamism perhaps about your own sexuality. If you can agree with the next then you can probably agree with the conclusion.
When the sperm meets the egg you are neither sex. The actual chromosome count (xy, yy whatever) is what determines your sex. I'm completely at a loss as to where, in the fertilisation your chromosomes actually become one or the other.
Having said that, your chromosomes do not determine your gender.
Maybe I'm splitting hairs but go with me on this.
As I understand it (perhaps haphazardly and completely wrongly) it is hormones which determine your gender.
Having said that, hormones (to my mind) will play a large part in sexual preference merely because both sexes hold both kinds of hormones associated with either sex.

As far as this goes. No I don't "understand" homosexual Males, nor do I "understand" Homosexual Females. Hell I don't "understand" Females for the most part. (Then again I don't "understand" most people.) The real question for me is do I accept them? The answer is yes I do.
As far as I'm concerned I could care less what people do sexualy with each other as long as a couple of simple ideas are followed. It is consensual. (Rape is a no no.
