You have a sister named phlegmina, don't you?

"Alot" was never in the dictionary because it's not a word. It's two words. A lot. A is the determiner. It's there because we need to point out that we're using a noun next every once in a while. Lot is the noun. Lot is a really cool word, actually. It means a portion, a parcel, a number of units, or a considerable quantity: extent. It's a quantitative or counting word.

So, if you say that you go to the the store a lot, what you're saying is that you go to the store a considerable quantity.

Welcome to Lit, where writers tend to hang out and pretend to not be geeky.

Why can't they just put it in there as slang so I don't have to type that one extra space??!!!

LOL

The dictionary is written by the Skull and Crossbones Society, when they're not busy ruling the world from the basement at Yale.
