I am going to try and sum up the basics of what has happend here.

Last fall there was a big deal about this lesbian couple that were going to be hired on as professors. Virginia Tech has this policy that in order to attract more qualified faculty members they will do everything possible to hire the faculty members significant other.

This makes sense since it can be difficult to attract qualified faculty members if their significant other already has a established job that he/she does not want to leave. By trying to find a job for the other member of the couple they can attract faculty members easier.

Tech offers a professor position to one of the women in the english department. She asks if tech can find a position for her signifigant other who is a education professor. Tech writes up a contract to offer her a position as an primary education professor. Both women agree with the contract and the english professor takes her position and the other woman agrees to take the education professor position.

So all seemed well or so we all thought. The Board of Visitors still had to give the final approval to the woman's education contract. The BOV denies approval of the contract supposebly because of budget cuts and tech could no longer afford to hire the other woman.

Now if it had just stopped here then nothing more would have come of this story besides a basic breach of contract dispute.

Too bad for the BOV that a few other things happend. The newly hired engineering dean had his wife hired for an administration position that paid about the same as the other woman's education position.

An anonomys email was found to have been circulating between the BOV members saying not to hire the woman because she was a lesbian. This prompts a massive letter writing and petition campaign to force the BOV to the hire the woman. Just a little while ago she was finally hired for non-tenure track position that was nothing like the original position described in her contract.

Now you all have the foundation of what has been going on here so this is what has happend currently. The BOV has done several things at once that have managed to piss of just about everyone on campus.

1. The BOV has removed the language from Techs anti-discrimination policy that applies to sexual orientation. They did this on monday, right after spring break, when no one was here, in a closed session ,where no debate was allowed.

2. The BOV ended the affirmative action policy at tech before the Supreme Court has made a ruling on the pending affirmative action case.

http://www.collegiatetimes.com/index.php?ID=908

3. The BOV has given the president of the university the power to ban any extremist right or left wing groups from speaking on campus. Any group that the president labels as a "domestic violence" group or "terrorist" group could be banned from campus and not allowed to speak.

So lets see there was this massive protest in front of our administration building Burruss hall. From what I have heard a thousand some people eventually got tired of protesting outside the building and rushed the presidents office.

Still don't know what happend with that yet I will have to wait till the 10 O'Clock news tonight to see. I am sure this will start getting more media attention nation wide as well.

;)

Think you are funny don't you. It is spelled Hokie though.

Yes, but the actual word is spelled "hokey."

Yeah but that is not what we are.

I have never seen so many different people on the campus this united for or against one thing before. I mean not even football has gotten people this riled up and unified. The BOV was already pretty hated for raising tuition three times in the past year or so.

I will keep updating this thread as things happen if anyone is instrested.

i say you assasinate the mother fucking facists. it's the only way they'll learn.

me too, me too.

I'm interested, too. I want to know how this goes for them.

I'm interested, but mostly because I'm a Hoo and I think Techies are dorky anyway. ;)

I knew there was another reason to dislike you...

Not much new as of right now. Gov. Warner has denounced the actions by the BOV and has said this is very bad for the university overall.

Here is the article.

Here is the front page of the CT

The guy holding the Virginia is for Haters sign is one of my coworkers next door neighbors.

If you have adobe acrobat you can read the print version of the CT here.

I have been very impressed with the CT's coverage of this event so far. Normally they are very far to the left and pretty biased but are trying to stay more to the middle now. Yesterday almost all the letters printed were against the decsions of the BOV and the large editoral printed was in favor of the BOV. Today almost all letters were in support of the BOV, mostly for the affirmative action decsion which makes sense considering the demographic of the area, and most of the editorals were against the BOV.

Where the fuck is REDWAVE when he can be truely useful?

FYI, bottom line for me is and always has been "is the person qualified for the position?" If she was, she shoulda got the job.

Hi Azwed . . . sadly, the freedom of expression so proudly flaunted by Americans has been overruled by the politically correct . . . This is the first step on the road to a totalitarian state . . . the U$ Fourth Reich is upon the world, and only American citizens can protect American democracy . . .

Shades of Orwell's 1984 and Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 . . .

Remember, extremists of all religious persuasions are not nice people . . . good liuck, I'm afraid you'll need it :)

Don...would it be all that hard to have a original thought!!! Of course we all know stupidity on college campuses is original to American colleges.....is there no way you could have worked in the patriot act into you answer...I notice you only mentioned extremists of religous persuations......most political correctness on college campuses here are of the left....though I hesitate to use that word....there views long ago drifted from the left into totalatarianism....though this thread seems to be more about sexual bigotry.....And just for a point of reference this is a large country...the politics are very different from one region to another...where I live in Seattle...we had a fellow running for mayor, if he was running in Virginia he would have been considered a left wing Democrat....here he was portrayed as a right wing Republican.....what was he??? probably a mainstreet center of the road Democrat....he lost....big...

They should come to the UW.......

They even have a Red Square!

What ever happened to someone saying "fuck it" and applying at a different place?
It seems like a protest is the only thing the dumbed down population understands, even if nothing is accomplished by it.
After the smoke settles, would anyone really want to work with that BOV pieces of work?
This will get blown out of proportion like every other personal problem in society today.

If you come back on this observation, don't give me standard excuses for the activism.
1. I don't care to hear rhetoric.
2. Everyone gets wronged in this world, most don't sit in a puddle of their piss and cry about it.

Actually, Extremists of any persuasion are not nice people.

This is a reality that you should understand quite well.

Well they haven't used tanks against anyone yet.

What ever happened to someone saying "fuck it" and applying at a different place?

What so we just ignore the problem and it will go away? No, I don't think we will do that. There have been some talks of boycotting the school next fall because of some of the things that have been done but that is not going to happen.

It seems like a protest is the only thing the dumbed down population understands, even if nothing is accomplished by it.
Oh plenty has been accomplished already espesialy when several hundred people stormed into the presidents office demanding some kind of response

After the smoke settles, would anyone really want to work with that BOV pieces of work?
Uhhh the BOV is the governing board of Virginia Tech, kind of like the legislature of a state, so you have to work with them. This summer the Gov. will appoint four new people so that should help some.

This will get blown out of proportion like every other personal problem in society today.
Well if want to ignore all of the other issues and get down to the very base of the argument it is still a breach of contract dispute. I mean that gets to the only thing libertarians really care about at all personal property.

So your excuse for not liking people that protest or try and stop social injustice is that lots of people get hurt and most don't do anything?

Wow, that is pathetic LC I expected better of you.
