The U.S. may have had the ninth driest January on record but what about the rest of the world?

Higher temperatures put more energy into the system. That energy is then distrubuted by the high and low pressure weather systems which may shift because of the different energy levels. A high pressure area during winter will be cold and dry. The low pressure areas will move roung the high pressure area and deposit their rain or snow some where else. Like Australia which has suffered flooding.

That being said add this.

In a very real way it is and this postulate goes way back, 1952 or so as I recall.

The nut of it is that the Earth warms increasing water vapor (and providing a continuing source via oceanic warming). This in turn increases the planets albedo which causes increased precipitation, and when cool enough snow. Which increases the planets albedo which causes more cooling and more snow. Which eventually gives us an ice age.

Of course this ties up all that water vapor as snow and really dries the place out. Given that water vapor is even more potent as a green house gas than CO2, and there's so much less of it, the planet starts to warm up again.

We're just along for the ride.
