All things British

I had to finally google the difference between a quid and a pound. Found out there's no difference. Kinda like calling a dollar, a buck here.

So, ladies, what kind of tea do you prefer to drink? What's the most popular type in your respective countries?

If tea is a meal, then tea and cakes is a meal? Clarify for this dimwitted person, please.
Tea is no meal. Coffee is, though. :D
But I suppose that is a topic not for this thread.

Did you watch the BBC episode tonight on China, shy? Sheesh, slavery for women is definately alive and thriving there and with the proposed 40 million shortage of women in a few years time they predict slave trafficking, rape, prostitution, and abduction will increase. They said a woman commits suicide every 4 minutes, usually between the ages of 15-35, and that it is the highest female suicide rate in the world. It was a very enlightening show, but also sad.

God, no. I had no idea it was so difficult in the 21st century for women in China.
As all the channels were somewhat football obsessed tonight I chose to work instead.

I think its a series about China today, perhaps they will repeat it in the next few days.

Will have to check

Yes, is a 4 part doco about China now....have been recording it to watch later, but got to watch it tonight as it was on. Was eye opening....women who speak their mind are often beaten by their husbands, brothers, fathers, or whoever the male is in their life...they are considered possessions of men and are asked 'who do you belong to?' when meeting people who do not know them....they have to get birth licence if they become pregnant...and the list goes on.

I have a friend who was born in Korea. When she was 11 her father sold her to pay off a debt. When she was 14 she got pregnant and her owner forced her into a backstreet abortion that nearly killed her. Her aunt, here in the states, found out what was happening, and took out a loan to buy her from her owner. She brought her here to the states. My friend is very nearly sterile from the abortion, she's got one child and it nearly killed her. She was on bed rest for the entire pregnancy. She says she's lucky, that their's so many more, like her sisters.

Rose, hope you're feeling much better now.

The "meal" tea is about the same thing as The Waltons would have called "supper".

Have you found a copy of the Wire in the Blood series yet??

No IS, I've not found it yet. Got any ideas?

I'm up watching Midsomer Murders (that I recorded a while back) and was wondering what Shepard's Pie is. I know it has meat and potatoes in it. And my mom used to make it when I was a kid, but I'm wondering if she did it any where close to the authentic version.

Thanks to whoever answers this one. ;-)

You do a braised mince beef in gravy with onions , carrots , leeks sauteed off , flavored with Worcestershire sauce. Place that in a oven proof dish about 3/4 the volume the way up. Cover with seasoned mashed potatoes with cream salt, white pepper say about 4cms high. Then drag a fork over that to make a ridge pattern and bake until the top is crunchy and the already cooked mince part and potato is steaming hot all the way through.......... :rose:

ohhh revertables .............take a wartenberg wheel to make the ridges in the potato will take waaaaaaaaaaaay longer......very maso ...........laughs

Lets gets Kinky stuff back in the kitchen where it belongs huh.......... :D

Okay, this is nothing like how my mom made it. Sure sounds good, though.

What exactly is braised mince beef? I think I have an idea... And how about cream salt? What's that?

I'll google a receipe with American terms. Ground Beef is Mince I think.........brb ;)

back :rose:

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef ( what we refer to as mince as in minced beef)
2 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (traditonal english sauce)
2 eggs, separated
6 tablespoons butter
8 potatoes, peeled, boiled, and mashed
1 cup finely chopped onion
1 tablespoon ketchup
beef broth
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Brown ground beef and sauté onions in 2 tablespoons butter until golden. Mix ground beef with onions, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Add a few tablespoons of beef broth and cook, covered, over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, adding more beef broth as necessary to keep moist. Beat egg yolks until light, then in another bowl, beat whites until stiff. Beat the yolks, cream, 6 tablespoons butter, and garlic powder into hot mashed potatoes. Gently fold in beaten egg whites. Put meat mixture into a casserole then top with potato mixture. Bake at 350° until potato topping is puffed and browned, about 25 to 35 minutes.

This one above is close enough . There are 1,000's of variations of the same thing. Some people add frozen peas to the meat part of the dish. I think frozen peas are the spawn of the Devil...........smiles

Ohhh maybe ask Miss Shy her version as well . Plus Catalina

Yum, he loves it when I make it around here. :catroar: As to other things British, it's official, I am hooked on Dr. Who!! So badly now that when it finishes I flick over to the other channel to watch Dr Who Confidential to get al the background gossip and how they did it's!! Now I have to wait another week for part 2 of the finale which it sounds as if it is going to spin off into another show. :cathappy:

And your recipe is the same as the one rebecca posted?

I used to watch Dr.Who... ages ago. I'm not so sure I can even find it on my dish now. Geeeze, that show's been around forever!

Pretty much the same though no cream, garlic (think I put it in the BDSM Kitchen thread or will if I haven't) and I often put sliced tomato between the meat and potato. Saw recently on a Brit cooking show that is what makes it different from Cottage Pie.

I havent been much into Dr Who before but F started watching the new series and t grabbed my attention more than past ones...now they are creating orchwood, a 13 part spin off which I assume will start after this Doctor series finishes next week. Should be interesting as it seems it will be aimed at a more adult themed audience with Cpt Jack being the star who fucks anything and everything that moves irrespective of race, gender, species etc. :D

I get BBC/America here. Guess I need to find a guide to shows on there. Usually I just happen on it and find stuff I like.

Is Dr.Who on that network?

Um, not that I would ever recommend anything remotely dodgy legality wise, but I may have seen several eppies when I was cruising bit torrent....

I love this thread. I've learned lots of stuff. I'm glad to see you 'round here too, dollface.

What is Yorkshire pudding? How do you make it? Is it good? I mean, I hear pudding and I think of bread pudding or vanilla pudding... not meat with pudding.

Was watching it being cooked yesterday....seems you can fill it with anything as James Martin was telling how growing up they would have one for each course filled with the apropriate fillings. Here's links which also have the recipes Saturday Kitchen and BBC Food .

You know, I could google this stuff for myself but then I'd miss all the fun interaction with you guys and... I'm lazy.

But I'm still confused with this recipe. I've read it like 3 times. I know it's in English... LOL just not MY kind of English, I suspect.
