At long last I have the luxury of being able to work on an all over tan in the privacy of my own garden.
I've always had to be a bit careful with sun tanning as I have quite fair skin, so I'm going easy and only doing 15min on my back and front each. But I'm wondering whether there's any greater risk of sun burn to genitalia than the rest of the body? Does genital skin produce as much pigment as other areas of the body?

Yes, you can get a sunburn anywhere. I don't think you're any more likely to get skin cancer around your exposed genitalia. However, around your sensitive areas you're more likely to feel sunburn, whereas on your arms or legs you might not notice the same amount of exposure. So, no, there's no greater risk of sunburn to your peter, it's the same amount of risk as getting burnt on your arms, it just hurts a lot more.

You're more likely to burn on areas that rarely see the light, so if you're concerned, it might be wise to apply sunscreen to your genitalia, at least at first. Something like an SPF 15 will provide some protection while still letting some light through.

If you're fair skinned you should apply sunscreen to help you tan instead of burn. Factor 10 would be ok for your 15min sessions, with factor 15 on your face and genitals. Once you've built up a base tan, you can lower the factor you use.

Fair skinned people have the highest risk of skin cancer and also, sun exposure causes ageing more rapidly in fair skinned people. You don't want to start too fast here, especially if you haven't been much of a beachgoer or sunbather before.

Make sure you stay well hydrated and make sure you use a rich after sun cream, to prevent any dryness/sensitivity. It'll also minimise your risk of peeling. No good getting a tan if it falls off a few days later.

I've come across that Ausie philosophy before. But you have a lot more sun in Oz and it's much stronger. I'm not entirely sure their take on tanning is completely compatible with the UK's 3 day per year summer or sun that can only just warm the tarmac. ;)

Pale is the new tan! Save your skin and use a self tanner if you desire that bronzed glow. :)
