Pols: Charles Barron Too Bigoted To Go To D.C.

BY Celeste Katz

A team of New York politicians gathered Monday to make it clear they think Congressional wannabe Charles Barron is too much of an “anti-Semite” and a “bigot” to go to D.C.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, former Mayor Ed Koch, state Assemblyman Dov Hikind and City Councilman David Greenfield were among the pols who rallied outside the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park to convince voters Hakeem Jeffries is a better choice than Barron in the redrawn 8th CD.

"We need representatives who will focus on uniting communities, not dividing them,” Nadler said after the event.

Barron, a city councilman, has stirred indignation and rage for comparing the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians to the Holocaust and for singing the praises of African dictators, such as ex-Libyan strongman Moammar Khadafy.

“Charles Barron's support of dictators and terrorists such as [Khadafy] and support for delegitimizing Israel and comparing Israelis to Nazis is dangerous and abhorrent rhetoric that makes him unfit to serve in Congress," Nadler said.

At the presser -- which also included Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz and Councilman Mike Nelson -- Koch urged voters not to be taken in by Barron's charisma.

“One thing about Charles Barron is, he can be very charming, but so can a snake," Koch said in a statement. "We have learned to live together in this city despite our different backgrounds, and his vile, vicious assailing of Israel is simply not acceptable. I can tell you this without hesitation because I know him."

The former mayor, of course, made Israel a big issue in the special election between David Weprin and Bob Turner to replace ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner.

(We are awaiting a response from Team Barron -- CK.)

Update: “I think this is a reaction to my campaign picking up speed,” Barron told the Daily News. “It’s an attempt to distract me and get into some back and forth name calling, and I’m not going to do it.”

Barron said the crew who complained Monday must be worried that he got the recent endorsements from DC-37, retiring Congressman Ed Towns and The Amsterdam News.

“None of the people who were there represent any part of my district. I have travelled across the district, gone to Howard Beach, Ozone Park, every ethnic community, met with blacks and whites in Coney Island. And their concerns are about jobs, and health care and protecting Medicare and ending the wars so that money can come back home,” he said. “That’s what they are talking about – not this.”

Nadler and others said Jeffries was the rational choice in the Democratic primary.

All expressed dismay that Towns chose to throw his support behind Barron, rather than Jeffries. Though few in the crowd thought Barron would win, they said they didn't want to risk silence in what could be a low-turnout Democratic primary on June 26.

Separately, Gendar reports...

Barron said his pledge to bring his pugnacious style to Washington - including not saluting the American flag - won’t be a problem if he’s elected to Congress.

The fiery City Councilman was blunt in his contempt for formalities like saluting the flag last fall when he announced he was running in NY-8.

“I don't care what they say -- I’m still not saluting the flag,” he told supporters.

Now, with just weeks to go before the primary, Barron said his comments about the flag were a non-issue.

“I love having conversations about what I’m going to do once I get there,” Barron told the Daily News.

“None of that is going to be a problem. Whatever has to be worked out for me to perform my duties, will be worked out. Besides, nobody cares about that issue. Every place I go, the issues people care about are housing, health care and jobs.”

Barron’s flag talk comes after calling potential colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus “political punks.”

I don't know anything about this race, but I'm pretty sure the presence of Ed Koch (last seen endorsing a Republican for the old Weiner seat) protesting against this guy is counterproductive.
