So I was sitting and thinking randomly today, about fetish clubs and the like. And I was wondering what different people's opinions of mixing alcohol and BDSM were.

Alcohol affects different people different ways. I personally don't see any reason to mix alcohol or drugs with a session. I get high off what is being done to me. Stimulants tend to cloud ones way of thinking and acting. Also, pain is felt on a different level when under the influence. I don't use drugs and only have a glass of wine about once a month. I tend to agree, what got me thinking was all the fetish clubs I have been to serve alcohol, and there is often drinking and playing. I was just wondering people's opinons on this, figured it would make for some good discussion.

I'm not a believer in mixing alcohol or any substance abuse with play simply for the safety factor. Just as with driving, there is always that group of people who maintain they have special powers that allow them to partake without any detrimental effects. I often wonder after reading some of the defensive remarks of those who include drink and/or drugs in their play, why they need that extra 'relaxation' or that 'buzz' to get them through something they profess they love and get off on.

Personally I don't mind if there have been a single drink or glass of wine before playtime, but definately nothing more. I haven't had much play experience, but I won't play with anybody who have had to many drinks. It definately affects them, and their limits, which is dangerous in BDSM.

More dangerous when T drinks; he gets very sadistic. I still consider it acceptable risk for our flavor of play; he's shown he still recognizes code words.

Definitely something I consider RACK but that's my angle.

why people would want to mix the two. I don't need that kind of relaxation (as I have had problems with alcohol in my past) so I don't think I could safely mix them even if I wanted to.

I don't think alcohol should be mixed with any equipment that could take a person's life if misused, be it a car or a suspension set up.

If you and your sub have a few drinks to loosen up before play, have fun, count me out but have fun.

I believe that any harm caused to the sub while the PYL was under the influence is a case of criminal neglect, same as hitting someone with a car would be, but that's me. I've a strange legal view point.

I agree here. I can understand perhaps a glass of wine or mild drink earlier in the night with dinner perhaps, but the idea of drinking in any amount, and then scening seems very unsafe to me. Too much chance of serious harm, both physically and emotionally, or something serious going wrong. Also, there is the chance that someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs might engage in something they are not otherwise mentally or emotionally ready for, leaving regrets, or perhaps ruining for them something they might otherwise like.

You mention that you do this at a club, and I could possibly see someone being more comfortable doing so in that setting, with others around who could stop something if an inebriated participant got out of hand, but what about in a more private setting, how do you feel about it then?

I don't drink too much in private, and I try not to get plastered anyhow (although it does happen). I wouldn't have a problem with my sub getting drunk, but I wouldnt want to be too drunk myself, especially if she was going to be very inebriated.

Drinking in private doesn't really appeal to me, I'm not a very inhibited person as it is. Sometimes it's nice to have the excuse to be an asshole in a fetish club setting though.

Yeah, I am in retail too, and your right, they test hard for that, where I work, management is subject to random testing, as well as pre-employment.

I believe that when someone recreationally and willingly takes a mind-alterer of any kind, they are automatically (whether or not they know it) fully accepting any responsibility for their behavior whilst under the influence of that mind-alterer.

But maybe that's just me.

Ahhh, yes, I think perhaps you have touched on something here. Without the physically "harmful" element, that eliminates that safety risk, but do or would you only do this with a sub who you have previously determined was ready for this type of play, eliminating the potential for doing something they were not ready for because of the influence?

Moot point as my party days are over for a long while, it seems, but even when I was able to indulge, I tend to play with equipment and toys that could harm someone seriously. I never minded if my bottom wanted a beer before being fisted or something like that, but I have to be in the attentive zone for the kind of play I like, and I was always a lightweight.

Oh shoot me now, I just found myself nodding and agreeing with aeroil. For me it doesn't work. The two bdsm clubs I know of fairly well do not allow alcohol or recreational drugs on the premises and will not allow you in if you appear to be inebriated. BUT they are social clubs, not clubs like the Vault or whatever. I know a guy who doesn't get drunk but he will once in a great while have a beer with dinner of a Saturday before going to the club. His sub doesn't really seem to mind, but then again, there's a few hours between drinking and beating. However, playing under the influence is your choice; if you trust the person and don't mind the edgieness of the scene, go for it. I consider it an edge play sort of thing, and it's not an edge I want to play with!
