I like how he points out, without belaboring the point, that he was looking at our society (at the time) through fresh eyes.

He had seen, first hand, what happens when a society allows itself to marginalize entire groups of people.

Sure, if by marginalize you mean herd them off to concentration camps like cattle. But Einstein didn't see that first hand. He never went back to Germany after Hitler took power in 1933, he was visiting the US at the time and stayed as far as I know..

He witnessed first hand the marginalizing of Jews. That was not something that sprang from the ether after Hitler came to power. It was already virulent prior to Hitler and led to the acceptance of a guy with Hitler's views.
