Alaska is Just 15 Minutes from Anchorage

I was supertramp long before McCandless. And the closest I ever came to dying was on a mountain in Denali. It's a miracle I didn't.
But surviving cost me a book and movie deal.
Which makes me wonder~in a cage match involving a kodiak, a polar bear, and a siberian tiger, who'd come out alive?

If......

Does it matter?

Are studded tires your best option? (Aside from driving slowly?)

Good winter tires with steel studs. Pay the extra "stud tax." It's worth it. If it saves you from one trip to the ditch in one of these modern cars made from beer cans, the cost is well worth it.

Alaska was just on our local news!!! Cars crashing into each other on icy roads. They need some remedial ice-driving training up there.

This is how we help the Californians decide that Alaska just isn't for them. They get a little banged up and they leave. They can't always get what they want.

Years ago when I had an office in the city, my window looked out onto the street, which was a very slight hill. I was standing there watching and the street was a sheet of ice. A car at the top of the (very slight grade) hill started to slide backwards and like slow motion, it slid down the hill and banged into every car parked there... which then also started to slide. people were run/walking along side the cars trying to stop them, which is impossible (physics and all that stuff). In about 5 minutes all the cars were piled up at the bottom of the hill.

It was kinda funny. Especially because my hoopty was in the garage under the building.

Currently, two of the three vehicles in my stable are shod with Hankook iPike tires with steel studs. When this shit melts (and it will), I'll bring the other down the hill and put the steel studded Cooper Discoverer M+S tires on it. I could save a buck by buying studless tires. But, it's not a smart thing to do.
