Perhaps if it appeared to be heading into a rather important building, say, the White House, it might shoot it down, innocent passengers or no?

What a dumb thing to do on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Especially flying out of NY.

I flew yesterday. For some reason a bunch of white, middle-aged, Midwesterners flying from one Midwestern city to another looked rather suspicious, so we got to be scanned in the normal way, then right before boarding, randomly searched again.

Seriously, that's what they're scrambled for. In the event the jet looks like it's going to crash into something a la 9/11 the Air Force will shoot it down.
