Advertising...its everywhere...and AoL instant messenger is not safe from their stalkers....they will Ping you with stuff like hi im an 18 yr old porn star come see my pics!!

I didnt ask for this when i signed up....one of these damned things are ok....but 3 consecutively is a bit much....

Dont ever go to Yahoo chat either; you'll get buried alive in bots. ;)

*sigh* it is every where. I was watching something on tv yesterday and noticed for the first time that fox was using "pop ups" to advertise what was on later. Geesh. Enough is enough.

dont even get me started on pop ups....and how they kill my laptop....:( GRRR (with a capital GRRR)

It is the premise of the Internet that everyone here wants to see pornography. Or at least it would seem they have it set up that way. Very rarely do I frequent sex sites, other than this one, and my hotmail account is so full of junk and spam that I can not get my real mail. It is everywhere now though, when you watch anything you can not help but see the WWW of some site. I even went to a fair today and they had WWW addresses on the bags of chips at the concession stand.

The minute I sign on to AOL , I have not even open my email when all of a sudden there is "pinging" every where... I opened one once and I got the same thing. Some thing about a porn site.

I get them all the time , its annoying.

I use Yahoo, MSN and AOL Instant Messengers.. I never get any porn ads.. I'm pissed!

Yep....i get like 3 ones with different names...i just quit opening them....its all the same....

Its not just porn either. At one of my email accounts I get a daily mortage/refinance spam from the same place. After a few months you think theyd remove my email!

I don't get them either. Where should we complain?

Dawn

No thanks.. I'll keep my computer (now that it's running properly)

Are you guys talking about Pop ups or what?

maybe I don't have that problem because I not only have a pop up killer but I also use ad aware religiously and delete all the crap programs that piggyback with programs that I do want.

I also have a firewall set up..

*shrugs*

I average 60 to 70 pieces of spam a day, in my hotmail

It's also bad when you suspect someone has *spammed* your email account. Which is what I believe happened to me two months back.

Who knew that MSN has a limit on how many addies you can block?? 250

Two days in a row I clicked the link at the bottom of all my spam to take my addy off of their list ..... and still continue to receive shit from them.

It's very frustrating

So do you have any solutions about the hotmail. I use hotmail and think it sucks because of spam but I don't want to have to get a new address.

Sometimes the 'remove' only tells them someone actually read it. Then they sell your addy to the next spammer. I just highlight it all and delete it. Blocking doesnt help either, they make up fake addys every time they send.

I think origianlly this was AIM pings, then it became popups, then spam.

I've been told if you limit the number of days your computer stores sites you've visited it helps. But it sure doesn't seem to make a difference on my hotmail account. Does seem to help with outlook though. I've also recently downloaded a popup killer, which does seem to have helped a little bit, but I think it's also effecting my real pm and im messages. Which is something I'm willing to live with.

The solution that I came up with isn't really plausible .... what I had in mind was to open up a old fashioned can of whoop ass on the sorry sumbitch, who spammed me. But Ireland is a long way from West By Gawd Virginia *lol*
(yes I have a very good idea who it was lol )

I'd heard that as well .... but was desperate enough to give it a try anyway. :(

Well Christopher nice to meet you, lol. Once someone kept calling me Jerry and all of this crap. Turned out it was just a friend being a butt.

I am sorry to say, but that is NOT what you want to do. Sure, they put that down there and say it is because of law they have to, but it is actually for their benefit.
You see, spam is a mass thing. They have no problem sending out mass messages, just to get their message "out". They don't care if they don't always make a connection with every email. BUT, if you click on that and send them a message to have your email address be removed...all you are doing is...
1) sending them your exact email address and
2) telling them there is a live person on the other end.
This will just get you put on another list.
Sure, they are suppose to take you off their list, but don't believe it.

Anything you send your email address to, like signing up for offers, sending cute messages through some web page, taking I.Q. tests, buying on line, sending on chain letter emails, or any of many other things will get you on a spam list.

The only way to get rid of most spam is to have an email address setup just for those things. If you have to send a live email for something, use that email. If you want to take that I.Q. test, give them that email for responses. Anything you HAVE to send a valid address for, use that email. This will then keep your main email less likely to get spammed.

If you are one who has to send the chain emails on, be sure to remove all email addresses from the header, or the spammers can get one email and it can have up to 50 or more addresses on it, including yours. Those chain letter emails are the ones that ask you to send to 5,10,20, or everyone in your address book. They may be cute, or they may be saying you will have good luck, or they may have a message to send on. I consider them all junk mail, but if you must send them on, remove addesses and blind carbon copy the ones you send to.

The reason you get more porn is because they are the most persistant group. They are all over the place. Mortgage spam is growing. Investment offers are too. But, it is all spam, if you didn't ask for it.

Ad Ware is one option for pop ups, but it doesn't work all of the time, because spammers are constantly changing how they get to you. They are now getting into the messenger programs, as someone has mentioned.

You can also use your email filters, but you have to be constantly changing them, because spammers are constantly changing.
Blocking an address is not the most effective method, because they use a different address most of the time. That is OK for the ones that don't change, but use your filters to find the bulk. Hotmail and Yahoo! don't have the best filters, but some will work. Look for words that are in most spam. I have one that looks for Viagra and it removes many. Also, if you have one look for loan, it may get some more.
But, all of this is almost a science, because you are battling a group of skilled people on the other end.

Spam is not going away. And, Hotmail and Yahoo! have started charging for some services, and so they don't want you to stay with the free ones. They have both opened up their emails to spam, and taken the liberties to sign everyone up to their own spam. They secretly added options to their opt out areas and put everybody in the YES category. Because they didn't mention it, you may be saying YES to some crap. Go to your options and look for anything that is worded to say you opt in to receive any of this. In Hotmail, it is a small menu of 3(I think) radio button options, and with Yahoo, it is a large menu of 10(I think) options. IF you don't know of these, it is a fact you are set to receive them. Nice or them, huh?

These are only options to try, but the sad fact is you won't be able to get rid of all of spam.
Just use common sense in the use of your email address. Ask yourself the question "why do they need my email address?" If you don't need anything from them in return, try a fake address. Only use your valid address if you trust the web site completely! One little mistake and you could be put on another list. THEY ARE OUT THERE!

best thing u can do is set up a email client like outlook express or any other one to get your mail from your hotmail account , u can set up many message rules that will filter out the junk and there is no limit on how many addresses it ignores

DVS ......

I appreciate all of your advice

I've always unchecked all of the boxes offering *free* crud, I have two email addresses that I use when I take those silly but fun quizzes, or I give them a *fake* addy.

While I have always received my fair share of spam mail, it was never of this magnitude before.

I know why it is now .... it started happening two months ago .... I have several other email accounts set up, that I only give to my closest and most trusted friends, to ensure that that 'person' doesn't get ahold of those and do the same to them.

It's bad enough when it's companies that are doing this to you... but even worse when it's someone that you knew being a childish malicious fool.

It used to piss me off to log onto my computer and instantly, I get some damn pop up AIM asking if I would accept an IM from "whoever". Then when I accept it, it's some damn porn shit or an invitation to amateur page.com

This is also why I never go to any chatrooms anymore. I remember the dumbasses who would log into a chatroom just to throw some website down your throat and interfer with the chats that's going on.
