I know I said I wasn't coming back, but I've been reading everything that has been going on and I was wondering what the populace of the AH thought of having a thread Moderator?

I mailed Laurel about this and she would set it up if the desire was here for the position to exist.

I volenteered myself, seeing as I have no life and I'm on Lit about 10 hours a day, if not more.

Okay, going to set up the poll.

Welcome back to the fold, T.

Depends on what the mod do.

The other forum here that I frequent, the poetry board, got a moderator account set up by Laurel a while ago. Pretty much only to be able to post stickies at will and keep the permanent review thread clean from other posts. It works pretty well, but we have to explain it to the occational newcomer that no, we still have free speech and the mod is not a copper.

If we can limit it to something like that, I don't see why not. Just as long as we're being open with the mod's role.

I think debacles like this recent top ten/pink belly/cock av/sandwich discussion is not the job for a moderator to step in to. They should run their course in an open forum, and hopefully we all learn from the experience.

What about posting our "Top 10 Best Candidates for Monitor" and then rotating those ten on a "Monitor of the Day" basis?

That seems fair.

By the way, T, you have a handsome face.

I like it. It makes me curious about the rest of you and that's sexy.

;)

No.

I don't necessarily care to take part in all the threads. I don't necessarily care to read all the threads. But I also don't want one person's concept or agenda to be imposed on AH.

This community of people changes, evolves, progresses and regresses as time moves forward. Just because I don't like the current feel of the community, doesn't mean that it is always going to stay that way.

I also feel that the community self-corrects itself. If a topic or comment is too far out of line, then the resulting hue and cry will act as a regulating influence.

The key here is that the AH does not have a closed sense of identity or a fixed agenda that some of the other threads have. I would much rather it stay that way.

I'll be completely blunt, I see absolutely no reason for a mod....why would you think we need one????

Where's amicus when we need him? We need him to come charging in to yell about free markets.

I don't think we need a moderator. If they're not a policeman, then there's no real point in their existence here and if they are a policeman, what's unacceptable? I haven't seen anything (apart from the stupid 'Shakespeare for a Buck' spam) that would warrant deletion.

We argue, we fight, we get into hair-pulling contests. If there was a policeman here to make sure we all got along, then every thread would be people agreeing wiht each other. That would really be depressing.

I voted no as well.

From time to time the AH wobbles from one extreme to another. Most misunderstandings are caused by good intentions not malice. Even the political threads are generally polite compared with other boards.

I think choosing who could be a moderator could cause even more hurt feelings. Solomon's wisdom and tact might be required and a detached attitude. The last might rule out all of us.

*shrug* Looks like the verdict is no so far. However, as for what Fool said, I can be very impartial and I wouldn't be deleting anything that I found offensive to me, it would work the same as it does in most of the other forums. If I recieved a complaint about something, I would investigate it.

It is also partly to keep the forum a bit tidier. Old threads that don't get talked in anymore could be deleted, moved, etc.

Would make it so Laurel doesn't have to do all the stickies, she's got enough on her hands already.

It isn't just about removing mean posts. There is a lot more to having a moderator. When I first got here, the issue was brought up, well more discussed, about why we didn't have one. Someone said that we were mature enough to handle it on our own. I do tend to agree with that, but still, upkeep is nice.

Honestly I think the board pretty much moderates itself. If someone does something bad enough the others here let them know.

In her absence:

Tatelou votes No too (we were chatting).

Exactly. Sometimes the AH is a street brawl outside the Library of Congress, and an hour later its a hushed audience listening to a reading of Penthouse Letters by the late John Barrymore. Why tamper with imperfection?

Thank you, I don't get positive comments on my face very often.

No, No, and Freakin No. The AH is not going to be moderated, any time a GodMod stuck his head up all authors would scream censorship and I would be screamin loudest. The authors will moderate themselves.

P.S. Tolyk I could never be mad at you but I really think its a bad idea. Everybody here goes through these stages and gets mad and then makes up, with a moderator it will not be makin up but blowin up.  :rose: You are brave to volunteer and I like you so don't, I would be mean to you if you became a GodMod where I like things free and open.

As I said, I'm opposed to a forum regulator of any sort. And old/undiscussed threads...don't they just fall off the top page and into obliviion automatically.

What could be useful is to have the opportunity to stick the occational thread, and maybe tidy up posts that gets accidentaly posted in the wrong thread. But that's pretty much it. Unfortunately, the board system can't grant that right to anyone without assigning the full mod role. In which case the mod must be the ultimate vir bonus, someone that everyone would always trust. And hell, I don't even trust myself most of the time. ;)

You're probably not counting things like the offer of an aromatherapy facial massage preceded by a tongue-bath as "comments."

Well, as far as I know, I don't think I've ever had such an offer as that.

The best description I have of myself is from a conversation during math class in the 9th grade.

Crystal: Kyle, he's hot.
Crystal's friend (dont' recall her name): Yeah, he's very good looking.
Crystal: And Mark, he is so fine with his bald head.
Crystal's friend nods, both look at me.
Crystal: Dean? Dean's nice.

Yes, if for the purposes of helping out Laurel and Manu with Stickies and the occasional house cleaning if they require it.

No, if for the purposes of the AH aquiring a Baby-sitter. We are all adults here, and I would consider it an insult, to an almost degrading degree.

P.S. I agree with Shereads. There is just something about a man with glasses. :)

That is a picture of me altered with photoshop.. I changed it to a line drawing (which looked quite nice) and then applied a bit of colour by layering the original in behind it.

I liked the overall effect.

You look a bit like the actor who played Ricky Fitts in American Beauty.
