Accent Fetishes

Have you seen My Fair Lady? The English lessons on how to speak properly are very funny.
No I haven't. I swear those accents are fake, maybe I'm too young 😛
In Scotland anyway it was Jean Brodie lol x

I think it's an acquired taste.
Do you think there as many different accents in the US as in the UK.?
I feel like we have so many for being such a small country.

There are many. Both regional and local. Even in some states you can find two or even more accents. It has alot to do with who originally settled the area. Such as in Maryland where I now live in the western areas, there is still more of a German influence while in the eastern it is more British with Baltimore having its own. When younger I lived in Louisiana the southwest areas sounded more French due to the Arcadian influence while parts of New Orleans sounded like they lived in Brooklyn, New York the day before from Irish immigrants that landed in New York and their descendants drifted south.
The other thing is American English contains plenty of words from other languages left over from settlers and those can vary from region to region.

Yeah but isn't an American state the size of the whole UK? And we definitely have many many more than two accents, just multiply that!
Maybe being a much larger country you are just more spread out?
I really would love to learn more about different American accents though. At the moment I only really differentiate between New York/ Deep South and a general classic American accent that's neither or those two. If that makes sense? 😬

I enjoy most British accents. Although, my friend and her brother, who are from Scotland, are difficult to understand. Her brother’s accent is even more grating than his sister’s, for some reason.

Scottish is quite hard even for English people to translate, especially on the phone! But they tend to have the best humour I will say that

You can add one for the West Virginia area. Southern and Texan are definitely two separate accents. My area is traditional American, although I've been said to have an accent before. I don't think that's true.

Some Scottish accents even I struggle to understand lol. I imagine it's the same in most places. But it's still a hot accent ;)

Oh jesus, were getting pussy-whipped tonight!
Anyways I enjoyed hearing your accent , thank you ;)x

I needed a new hobby, and now I think investigating the many different American accents may be it!
Let me know where to start! x

I would say starting in the South is the most interesting. The Mid-West is likely going to be boring, so I'd start in TX, work east to the Atlantic Ocean, then up Appalachia, ending in New England.

I'm tempted to ask you to just send me youtube links. Geography is not my bag so much.
Or post on here lol. I'm not trying to get you to message me 😝

You can educate us all! 😇

I am far from an expert on these matters. Merely using personal experience of having been to some of these locations.

I'll bet there's a Youtube video breaking it down though.

That Deep South is actually many different ones. Someone from Georgia will sound different than someone from Alabama. South Carolina has at least three and they are different from North Carolina which also has three.

Part of why non Americans only recognize a few American regional accents is we are becoming the bland news reader one with people moving so much. They slowly lose their local accent and adapt a more generic one in order to fit in more.

Ya'll don't leave Georgia out, now. The state, not the country. We are about as Southern as it gets here. Although, some around here are a bit too country sounding, even for me!

It's soooo complicated, my head is a wee bit frazzled.
Maybe voice notes would work better?

Your relationship with your microphone isn't the best but I love your voice note all the same. Glasgow or the surrounding area? X
I hadn't realised; I'll do better quality assurance in future! May actually update that if I listen back and it's truly hideous 😅

And Glasgow originally, then Edinburgh, then London (via overseas) and back to Glasgow, hence it's a bit lighter. For better or worse.. :) How about your good self, having just listened to your own (delightful and better produced) voice note?

Good morning,

I am originally from England, and having lived here for 20 years, I still get a kick out of people telling me how much they love my accent.

For the past 2.5 years, I have worked in customer service, which entails spending a lot of time on the phone with patients and facilities. People always tell me how much they love hearing me talk.

I remember one of my first calls from from a woman who lives in the same town as me, and she asked if I was married. Instantly, I felt pre-cum leaking from my cock. She then proceeded to tell me that she has a "friend" who loves the English accent and who likes to read.

Sadly, I never heard from her again, but I'll never forget that moment...
Where's 'here' , what English accent do you have, and how did you deal with the pre-cum sitch in your workplace? X
