I get the sad feeling I'm going to pay for that for a long time.

Too right, I have the memory of an elephant, but luckily I've worked on my figure. Parp! ;)

I also love your current AV MathGirl, such a mischevous glint in your eye.

Dest, shy for me means demure and unreachable, but only until I've had a few Bacardi and Cokes. After that point it's advisable to take cover.

Pop, I have an image of you imprinted on my mind now- fishnets?

Mlle, "Him and mother go everywhere, holds her hand without a care..." I lurve Madness. Suggs does a lot of TV shows here now, karaoke and the like.

Dear Pop,
I'll forgive you that if you'll tell me how to synchronize dual SU carburetors. My poor Morris is quite ill. I've heard that, years ago, British cars were such that an owner drove them all week and worked on them all weekend.
MG
Ps. Yes, both carbs have full oil reservoirs, although I've never quite figured out why a carburetor needs oil.

Hmmmmmmmm

Both dashpots need to be full of light oil, not engine oil that's too thick, (but will do the job for a while), more like sewing machine oil.

The oil acts as a hydaulic damper to the rising pistons in the dashpots preventing oscillation and thus poor running, it allows the needle's to open and close the main jets in a nice smooth manner.

The whole principal of SU carbs is they are vacuum operated with very few moving parts and no fuel wasting accelerator pumps.
As the engine speed increases so the pistons are forced up the dashpot by manifold vacuum and airflow from outside combined.
There is also an accelerator butterfly valve in the carb body operated by your right pedal, as this opens it increases the air flow, so increasing the vacuum so increasing the fuel flow, etc.

Now we come to the difficult bit, balancing twin SU's can be shit, but once set they should be OK for years if not pissed about with.
You really need a balancing gauge, plugged into both carbs it's a case of adjusting mixture and idle speed until a little indicator if central in the balancing gauge tube.

Mixture is adjusted by a nut under the dashpot assembly which just lowers to richen, or raises to weaken the main jet tubes.
idle is usually just a screw in contact with the butterfly assembly.
All this applies to early SU's of course, modern ones have been fucked up with anti polution crap all over them.

To adjust twins without a balance is I'm affraid a bit hit and miss, just a case of take the air cleaners off and bugger about until both carbs are making the same tone of slurping noise. of course not forgetting the balance fod between the two carbs may need to be adjusted as well as the mixture nuts.

If I can be of any more assistance feel free to ask:D Bet you wish you hadn't now

Dear Pop,
I didn't understand all that, but you obviously know what you're talking about. I've had two mechanics adjust the carbs in the past. One used a gizmo with two columns of water to adjust the pressure. The other guy used a stethoscope thingie and adjusted them by sound. They have both disappeared, and nobody seems to know how to work on the engine anymore.

The engine only has about 5K miles since a total rebuild, and I'm sure everything is fine inside. It's from a MGA and probably puts out a whopping eighty BHP when it's in top form. Trouble is, it's not in top form.
MG
Ps. Oh, woe is me.
Pps. Poor, poor Morris
Ppps. A 'dashpot' sound like an extra cost automobile accessory used by those incontinent of urine.

I've heard of a "tosspot" before, but a "dashpot" is a new one on me

Maths, try craigslist.com; just put your query on it, it's an amazing site for such seemingly lost causes.

Are you lost? Do you need a ride home little girl? Maybe a little candy?

Never know what obnoxious thoughts are going to bubble up in my brain...:D

ahem.. back to the purpose of this thread

:rose: WELCOME, Parklife!

and...

MG- I owned an antique Volvo when I was in grad school. I quickly decided that dating a mechanical engineer was a smart move. So smart that I married him. Haven't looked under the hood since. :D

(and for those of you who are about to go feminazi on me, I am an engineer, too ... I just choose to let someone else get grease under their nails. I've never mowed a lawn, either.)

:rose: b

I don't like to mow lawns either. I find that if I plant sufficient pine trees in the front yard they kill off all the grass nicely. No problem.

And I get to feel like I live in the forest.

Congratulations Parklife, I know how proud you are... will give it a read soon!

Just wanted to post a thank you for all of the welcomes and good words from people...

I haven't been around much since originally posting this but hopefully that will change soon.

I'm certainly seeing what it's like 'on the other side' as I've moved from reading here to posting that story.... "What do you mean there have been 2500 clicks and only 9 people voted and 3 people had feedback?!?!?" It's certainly given me an appreciation for clicking on that feedback button after reading a story. (From a self-professed former no voter-no feedback reader)

Something has been bothering me for quite a while now: the title of this thread.

ROTFLMAO Oh! Quasi! I so needed that this morning... thanks:rose:

Hey, why did I have to pay for my membership card, and extra for the full frontal 3-D pic on it? Where do I protest?

Perdita

I'll take care of it for you, Perdita, just send me the card and I'll get you a full refund. (how much was it by the way, I need to set aside a budget to help all the ladies who had to go through that experience)

Thanks, Eff. You can buy a share of the Golden Gate Bridge from me first.

Well, this one is far beyond your means, e.g., like my full-frontal.

with compassion, Perdita

Oh, well, compassion is good.

-FF (officially beyond my means - but not my goods)

Every time I sway my hips down the street to the local VFW, I ponder why my membership card costs me each year just to get in the door. Then, I get there, charm everyone, laugh my ass off and understand. (Note: I don't need a full frontal 3-D, they all know I skinny-dipped down the road and have a bald cooter.)

Giggles,
