You know, the first time I ever had to go to the US embassy here in London was to get all the neccessary paperwork to make sure that we could vote while we were expatriated. (Because a democracy only works if its citizens bother to participate in it, right?) But when I got to Grosvenor Square and noticed how the building is set up so no vehicles can get near it, and the cameras everywhere, and so forth, it was the first time I really grasped the concept of myself as an American being a 'target'. It kind of freaked me out, I have to say, and it was rather sobering. Even just reading the title of this thread made my heart jump a little bit, remembering.
I went to my old Uni campus in Kensington yesterday and spoke to some faculty and staff. My friend and I asked how the situation in the school is as there are a lot of Middle Eastern and American students there. They said that so far no fights or overly tensed feelings, but as they are an American University they have upped the security. Police drops by a few times a day to check in on both the Kensington and Richmond campus. Particularly the Richmond one. According to my friend who lived at the Richmond campus earlier feelings were raging after Sep 11th, and there were some fights where Americans and Middle Easter people had jumped each other.
