I think Shale said it very well just up above this post: The Art Gallery Forum

It sounds ambiguous enough to cover everything that could possibly go into it. JMHO :D

Ok, so how about this
THE ART GALLERY
Are you looking for inspiration or illustration? Come inside. This is the place to show, view and discuss all forms of visual art.

I'd appreciated input from more participants. Please?

Okay, we have a thread, taken as an example, like "Erotic Illustrators..." Great fun. Good thread to browse, fun to participate in, and at times really stimulating and productive, because the artists sorta cross-inspire one another and bring on new work. But suppose you come to such a thread once it's already 20 pages long? It's going to be time consuming to work through twenty pages of it. Daunting. The thing isn't even given an index page with lists of links, the way a lot of the amateur photo pages are.

There are new buttons in the forum code now to list 'attachments.' Back in the day, everything in the thread was an attachment, but a lot of the time, these days, we link the images in from Photobucket or someplace.

That still leaves a person wading through a lot of pages to browse that thread. And how big is it, now? 67 pages! I didn't even start to post in it until page 23. It's immense! And I think it gets irritatingly big quite soon in its lifespan. But you can't let it die, because of the attachments. One place only can you reference an attachment, remember? If the thread fades out, you have to make a whole new set of small-sized images (really too small, actually, for good detail, sometimes) to post them in a new thread.

Maybe thread format isn't ideal for this. Possibly, as LittleWolf was saying, a more straightforward gallery sort of thing, with thumbnails, would make the work easier to see. Easier to view is good, because it means more exposure. A lot of the images on that thread are buried. Not really buried, not forever buried. But not so easy to fish out.

A plain old gallery doesn't let us cross-inspire one another, though, the way a thread does. There's a real discussion in a thread, a lot of very cool interaction.

I think I need some kind of clear idea what you mean when you say Quartier Latin or when you say Gallery, whether you mean threads or what, exactly. What will it look like? How much interaction? How much ease of browsing just to look at the stuff?

I think its a great one. Being limited to a single thread is well, limiting.

Having a forum would allow to get a bit more specific on certain subjects (i.e. graphics, freehand, etc...especially a models needed thread!)

Good points ...

on the otherhand...
it is not tOO difficult to delete images from prior (nearly dead threads) ["I'm not dead yet! I think I'm getting better!"]......and then REpost the SAME ones. In a Forum that one (and OTHERS) can find.
The AH is fairly exlusive...a new Visual arts forum would be more obvious to those who are unaware where to look for such a place.

Certainly a thumbnail gallery with a discussion tool would be ideal, but what we have now is less so. A dozen participants?

not my battle anymore, really.
Exactly, DG.

I think what we have to ask for is one of those threaded galleries.

Open the thread and you're looking at the first image. Buttons " > " and " <" to send you along the line, horizontally as it were. Meanwhile, beneath each image is a place for discussion, sorta listed down vertically, so you can follow the conversation. Would that work?

That format also means no thumbnails in the thread, which might save bandwidth.

All threads appear on the main Art Forum board, which could look much like this one, the AH. Open any thread, though, and you're in a gallery format.

On the other hand, that's a lot of work for somebody.

Woha! Do I need to step on the brake here?

We were asking for a corner of the AH to put all the art-related threads together.
That's what I've done anyway.

Now, if we want something else, that's fine by me but I think it's not wise to add to our wishes at this point. Let's not get too greedy. :D

Seriously, I feel it's not fair to add to our wish list now that Laurel has agreed to look into it. I'm still thinking about a sub forum, with threads. The next step could be thumbnail galleries. I can see the advantages, but it's not what we asked for.
Besides, we all agreed on the benefits of interaction between writers and illustrators, didn't we?

The term Gallery should be scratched out of the name. It was a suggestion, but a confusing one at this point.

New proposal therefore:
THE VISUAL ARTS CORNER

Are you looking for inspiration or illustration? Come inside. This is the place to show, view and discuss all forms of visual art.

I'll leave this suggestion up for discussion until the weekend. I don't think it polite to let Laurel wait too long for my answer.

Still works for me. But I'm fairly easy to keep happy in these areas.

Black Tulip, thank you again for all of your efforts. :rose: :rose: :rose:

Black Tulip,
ANYthing would be an improvement.

I still question whether or not to have it WITHIN the AH.

again ANYthing ANYWHERE would be an improvement.

I gather the "sub"forum...would allow for different thread topics within it, correct?

That is what I have in mind. I hope that's how I explained it to Laurel as well.

Not yet, but I suppose she was busy with the Halloween Contest.

I sent her the suggestion from my previous post and she said she would take it up with Manu, to find out what the possibilities are.

Maybe we'll get a Christmas present? :nana:

:D
