A Student Offered Me a Bribe Today...

If you value your position and reputation you should report her immediately.

Overseas where?

I'm sharing this with Lit both because I need to remain relatively covert about this subject (i.e. I can't discuss it openly anyone but my supervisors) and its being likely quite sexual in nature. In short, I was offered a bribe today from one of my college students to give her an A for the semester.

There have been a few other students over the years who have brushed up against that line...but, again, not so overtly. I don't know whether to be insulted, amused, or...

But this one was direct: "What can I do -- what can we do for each other -- so that my grade becomes an A?"

(And I swear she stuttered and at first said "to" instead of "for.")

She's a smart student but a terrible writer. She from overseas, but her command of spoken English is flawless.

YIKES!

(That sounded very Admiral Ackbar.)

You mean, you think she's doing this in an effort to ultimately blackmail me? Or that the administration put her up to it to test me?

I doubt the admins would be so subtle. She maybe recording the conversation with her phone. What happens after that is no longer in your control.

It may be a real trap, or a metaphorical one, but still a trap.

It's funny how you added the YIKES![ at the end: capital letters, and in red.
No need for that tho - we all get it, you aren't tempted. :)

No question. I suppose it's leading me to further questions. Like, what vibe am I putting out there? Do other students do this? Has she gotten away with it before?

Also, I'm worried: What might the blowback be if I grade her too harshly?

That's why you tell someone now, before it becomes an issue.
It's not important if she's gotten away with it before unless the administration questions her. If she HAS then that may be the reason she is coming to you now, and not the fact that you are coming across as a teacher who'd be willing to be bribed.

I'll admit that there have been other students who have brushed against the ethical line before, but, no, I've never taken the bait or attempted anything with them.

What about the one from 2010...did you fuck her?

I am not at all surprised you've been propositioned over the years, it seems to come with the territory. Fun to think about, most likely, but definitely not worth throwing your career away over.

The only vibe is a position of authority over her. I owned a business for 8 years and during that time I had more than one employee that tried to get cozy with me to improve their position within the company. It is a power play on their part to try to get an upper hand.

I'm starting to realize that. I thought previous times might be might imagination run amok or a misunderstanding. THIS isn't!

And prior to your owning a business, were you ever tempted to try the same ploy? Or is it something only a certain manner of student/employee attempts?
