He'll never get the conservative christian vote because they consider Mormons a cult, not Christians.
"Real Conservatives" won't vote for him because he's too liberal. It cost him the last election because his positions on a number of issues left him unable to use the go to attacks of the right against President Obama without being exposed as a massive lying hypocrite.

He won't fare any better against the next Democratic candidate, whoever that is.

Yes, he's too liberal for overly conservative Republicans, and yes they refused to vote for him in 2012, costing him the election. You would think they wouldn't make that mistake again, but they probably would, if he runs. The best friends of Democratic candidates are hard right conservatives who would rather stay home than vote for a Romney.
