I understand the rule here against using characters under 18. However, I have hit kind of a grey area here and I would like serious opinions on this.

I am writing a story of a sorority initiation. All characters are over 18. However, part of the initiation is for the girls to tell of their first times doing various things. Some of these stories occur prior to the girls turning 18.

A. Do you think this violates the under 18 rule?

B. Do you think it violates the spirit of the under 18 rule?

C. Do you find this idea in bad taste?

A. Do you think this violates the under 18 rule?

Yes, it does break Lit's rules for submissions.

B. Do you think it violates the spirit of the under 18 rule?

Um, not sure, but probably, yes.

C. Do you find this idea in bad taste?

Nope, not at all. As the age of consent here is Britain is 16, and I know full well that such things go on before most people's 18th birthdays, I don't find it at all in bad taste.

But, those are the rules here at Lit. Nobody, in a story, is allowed to have sex, or any kind of sexual encounter, before they are 18. They aren't even allowed to talk about it and say they did.

Sorry, hon!

Well, I've seen some authors get away with breaking that rule. Usually as unimportant small parts of well-written stories.

Yes, I dutifully report the incidents to Laurel and Manu all the time.

Technically, they can say they had sex before they were 18, they can talk about it, but if they describe it in a graphic way, it's a clear violation of the guidelines.

Hello, Lauren.

Is your asshole ready for me?

Mine isn't ready for you!

No, not on a first date... or before the first date, anyway...

Whew, good to know, thought you were a lady not a tramp anyway.:)

Mc,

The others have laid it out correctly for you. The big no-no is giving a blow-by-blow (or stroke-by-stroke) DESCRIPTION of a sex act that involves a character under age 18. The only slight loophole I'm aware of is that, unless their age is specified, all high school seniors are considered to be at least 18.

Abstruse? Lucky?

Before you go too much further, gimme a second to get my video camera.

We're gonna make a mint I tell ya!

The first two have been answered. I'll take a brief stab at the third. It really all depends on how it is presented. I think it would be easy to come off as smarmy (for lack of a better word), but if it was done well it would not be in poor taste.

I would, however, find it difficult to believe that swapping stories of youthful sexcapades would be part of a sorority initiation. To me, that's about as believable as the ever-present pillow fight scene in men's fantasies about girls' sleepovers. Not because women don't discuss such things, but because we do. Hell, I've told damn near strangers about the joys and follies of my youth. It's not a big deal, at least not for me. It just doesn't seem like much of an initiation to me. There's no humiliation or difficulties there. Just swapping tales.

Of course, I'm depraved so that may have something to do with my nonchalance about it ;)

McF,

I don't really think it's in bad taste as much as I simply don't think it matters exactly what age they were. It doesn't add that much to the story to me. I think, if done well, there's a way to convey the women's youth through the simple method of showing their inexperience. It doesn't matter to me at all what their 'actual' ages are in college or before that. Maybe they're rushing for sorority during their junior year and these experiences occurred before that, but after high school. I'm not sure the actual detail of their age interets me at all. The thing that adds spice is the fact that it was the first time for something sexual and was recent enough that they still have lots of room to grow. Just me.
