I just happen to catch a fancinating program on PBS last night, "Magnetic Storm". It would appear that the earths magnetic field is about to go through a reversal in the near geologic future. Scientists have observed a lessening of the strength of our magnetic sheild which protects the earth from the solar winds which bombard our tiny planet day in and day out.

This reversal could happen within our life time or at the very least your childrens life time. Along witht he reversal there is a weaking of the magnetic shield which protects us.

From Transcript of Show said:
JOHN SHAW: "The rate of change is higher over the last three hundred years than it has been for any time in the past five thousand. It's going from a strong field down to a weak field, and it's doing it very quickly."

In three hundred years the field has fallen 10 percent. And the rate of decline is increasing.

Which leads me to believe that more radiation is getting through our shield.

Which also leads me to believe that the rise in global temperature is due to the weaking of our shield.

A possibility? A probability?

Magnetic Storm.

rising temperatures and magnetic field

As far as I understand the Earth's rising temperature is not effected by any change in the magnetic field. The magnetic field traps ions from the sun- the solar wind- and do not influence the temperature.
The rising Earth temperature has a number of factors causing it. One is human activity both in the production of greenhouse gases and the destruction of rain forests that absorb these gases. The other factor is the normal rise and fall of temperatures on Earth by nature- eg. volcanos produce more CO2 than humans do by several times. At one time the poles on Earth were warm enough to allow plants to live there a few million years ago.
The magnet field has changed poles many times in the past. From what I've read it doesn't suddenly flick off but rather collapes in a series of waves. Sometimes the field drops to zero and then rebuilds without reversing the poles. The poles also wander and are moving to new locations even now- I believe the north magnetic pole is moving towards Russia from Canada. The end of the field will ruin some electronic devices such as satilites but will unlikely cause the end of our civilization.

Yep! Poles are gonna switch :nana:

Ain't it cool!
Only if your one of the hundreds of thousands of people that won't be killed. Unfortunatly a lot of people and animals will die from the radiation that the weakening magnetic field lets through.

Also as the magnetic field weakens then there will be many outflux and influx of magnetism around the world causing a spectacular light show in the night sky. But these light shows will bring radiation rainning down on parts of the world which are heavily populated as apposed to the North pole where the population is very sparse.

 You're such a party pooper, Zeb!

Don't get me wrong, I really do think that the maybe we will see the reversal of the poles in our lifetime, maybe! On the other hand things will undoubtably change in the world when this happens. What those changes will be is anybodies guess, as the poles haven't switched in over 700,000 years.

If it doesn't happen in our lifetime, then in our childrens’ lifetime. How do prepare a child now for what may happen in the future. How will the governments of the world handle the problems that arise from the chaos that comes from the magnetic anomalies that are soon going to be popping up hither and yon.
