Could it be that the majority of the rest of Europe is Left of Centre and the Right would lose all hope of power? Just a thought (albeit a little one).
Just another reminder that the glory days of empire are over. No chance of regaining any colonies now. Imagine the reaction in Brussels if the Malvinas situation occured today?
Just my 2p (I'm Irish, btw--so I know a bit about having been colonised.)
Actually I think its more like that the right wing is
more conservative traditional, and less open to new ideas.
Not that I'm saying that new ideas are necessarily bad, BUT.
As a rational anarchist, I'm against large bureaucracies.
I think there must be an optimum size for government units,
which give the best efficiency, eg less corruption, red tape, wastage but maximum return in terms of services for your tax paid.
I think Europe is just too big to have one set of rules and
goverment. A law in one country might have totally different
interpretations in another due to culture differences.
I think it is about the conservatism (as well as the Conservativism) of the right.
I don't like the idea of losing control of my goverment (which is already happening anyway). But its going to happen, so its better to try to make the best of it.
It could be a national legacy too. The history of Germany, France and some other prominent European states is of increasingly cenralised power, with the amalgamation of states in their recent history. Germany was united in the 1870's, Italy about the same time, the whole history of Spain is a gradual amalgamative process, France is old, but has always been tightening central control and trying to expand its influence.) But other European states have been pretty stable for a long time, like the United Kingdom (consistent government established over a thousand years ago and reaching something like it's present form 400 years ago, this year in fact) and Denmark. Both Euro-sceptical because they have not had that history.
So it comes down to a number of very selfish reasons...
They feel that by becoming wholeheartedly part of a unified Europe they will lose power at home.
They mourn the loss of an "Empire".
They are afraid of being swamped by the large left of centre movement that dominates mainland Europe's politics.
So all this hype about saving the pound; the UK's sovereignity; not being ruled by Brussels and "we are an island". Is just that - hype. They don't really believe it themselves.
All they want is to continue along on their merry way being a large fish in a small pond and to hell with everyone else.
