I was talking to a friend last night and we were discussing the rules and regulations of censors. On TV, they allow the audience to see an abundance of guns, murder, blood, guts, gore and mayhem and always have. Yet, there is no swearing or sex allowed. Sure, we protect our children from the harm of viewing people having sex but why do we not protect them from the harm of viewing death? Both acts happen on a daily basis all over the world...what makes one viewable and one not?

i don't have an answer to your question, but i have often asked the very same question. i will be interested in reading other's comments. Thanks for asking.

Don't know what show your seeing, but I see sex on tv

I've personally always thought that violence was much more obscene than sex. IMHO

Not really. You see the "almost" sex on TV. You don't see the actual lower half of two bodies appearing to join as they are always covered by sheets...same with the top.

Why aren't the brains that splatter against the wall covered with a sheet?

I think this is an American thing. We in Canada have warnings before movies and tv shows with "coarse language, scenes of graphic violence and nudity". Swearing isn't edited out and now most nude scenes aren't either. I don't understand why in the US it's ok to see graphic violence but not sex and the no swearing thing is kinda funny too.

Uhm okay.. Like I said i don't know what yo uare watching but I see more full body views and sex now adays.

Ive seen full frontal nudity on network tv during prime time, and swearing too.......in a few years it will be way past out of control.

You dont watch much tv I gather Mia.

In America we don't want to conflate action with speech.

Am I the only one who is way tired of seeing these rare words used in here? I think some of you belong to the " A new word a day club"

And save your breath if you are about to tell me how common the word conflate is....or Jingoistic......

We have the same warning in America.

I don't know what shows people have been watching, but there's a lot on regular television that looks like softcore porn to me. Especially when there's a FOX logo in the corner of the screen.

The violence on network television is no more graphic than the sex. They don't show the brain exploding from the back of someone's head when a gun goes off.

Besides, maybe I'm weird, but I don't need to watch a cock sliding in and out of a pussy to get the idea what's goin on.

Let me hear a gunshot, I'm pretty sure someone died. Show two people that appear to be nekkid moving around under the sheets, and I'm pretty sure there's nookie going on.

7 words...You dont have small children do you

I do, and I still think the puritanical control over normal, healthy adult interaction is crazy.

Of course, my oldest monster's first word was fuck. *shrug*

Oh how padestrian of you. Expand your horizons. Push back the walls of ignorance.

Figures....you can spell the words nobody uses but maybe twice in their lifetime but you cant spell Pedestrian

Hopefully everyone has sex and only a few kill.

I would rather my child take sex for granted rather than violence. That way he wouldn't need to come to an "adult" board to find out what can be fun...

See we can all use a little help from our friends.

You're tired of rare words? How sad.

If you don't use words they fade away. The more words we have the more colourful we make our speech and written word.

An enquiring mind should never tire of words.

Good point. My question is why do they show the blood or the gunshot wound (at times other than late night when the kids are supposed to be in bed) when they don't show the skin??? Unless of course, you are watching JennyJones during the day.

I don't need to see the actual actions to know what is going on. Why do they not leave it all to the imagination?

I guess that Buffy and some of the other shows do show skin...but it is more rare than the cop shows with the killing, etc.

I am just pondering out loud here...no offence is meant to anyone.

Are you saying that you would allow young children to watch a pornographic sexual scene on tv or in person at your home?

And believe me I am no prude but being a new stepfather, I have really taken note of things visable to small children during prime time television and music available.

If you dont notice the desensatzation(sp) of young people today through violent video games, rap and some rock music, and sex on tv.....then I dont know exactly what to say.

We had this discussion in our home just the other nite with the kids. We were watching a show about Elvis and back in my young days they wouldn't even show him from the waist down for a long time because they thought it was too suggestive to see him shaking his hips.....today....if they said FUCK on "Freinds" my kids wouldnt even blink an eye.

Blood, guts and gore = obscene/unnatural.

Human sexual activity = wholesome/natural.

We just have screwed up priorities.

You obviously don't live in the US and have cable.

no, and I didn't imply that I would. But I don't believe it's the television station's job to shield my children from things I find inappropriate.

My kids are almost six and almost three. They're not desensitized by any of the things you mentioned. They don't play video games, because we don't own a gaming system, they don't listen to rap or rock because they don't ahve their own stereos and when I feel the need to listen to Henry Rollins, I do it with earphones on.

I monitor what they see/hear/are exposed to, because that's MY JOB. I don't rely on anyone else to do it.
