A question about the contest......

I was just wondering, I mean since this 2003 holiday contest is like a grand finale at the fireworks on the 4th of July and all. Shouldn't the entries be limited to one story entry per author? I was looking at the list for this 5th anniversary holiday contest, and I noticed that Sandman alone has three entries in this contest. Is he that hard up for cash, or what? I thought he already had enough prestige around here to float a casino so it can't be for that can it? I mean he'd have to win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place to make any real money or prestige by entering 3 stories, right? So is it just me, or does it seem unfair to everybody else, too?

my opinion

If all of his three stories are better than any other entry... *shrug* what can one do?

Actually I don't think one author can win all the three prizes.

Then, I don't think for most of the authors who entered, it's about money at all. Not winning either. It's just some fun and getting the reads up.

It doesn't seem unfair to me that an author submits more than one story.

They did remove the limits on previous winners, so everyone is eligible in this contest. But DP is right, Sandman could only win one of the prizes.

As far as multiple entries, from a statistical viewpoint it is probably a disadvantage to enter more than one story. I'm making an assumption that some readers have favorite authors. Some fans will vote on all three stories, but some will only vote on one. Having three stories means that any single voters get spread out.

The best comparison I can think of is what happens when there are three or more candidates for the same post and two or more are from the same party. The party with only one candidate has a built in advantage.

So, I don't really see the necessity for a rule about it. I think it is more likely self defeating.

Guilty as charged

I entered two stories for the Winter Holiday competition, and two for other competitions.

I never expect to win because I don't write the type of stories that would win.

I expect to get more views, more feedback and exposure for my other stories. That I have got with every competition I've entered.

Once the competition theme is set my brain starts working on plots and scenarios for that theme. I'm writing the third Winter Holiday story now. It won't be finished in time. Who cares? It's another story to post on Literotica.

The competitions encourage me to write to a timescale and on a set subject. Without those two inducements my stories can take months or years to complete. Although I now have 50 submissions I have nearly 100 uncompleted stories waiting for attention.

NaNoWriMo provided another boost to my writing. Any competition does. I enjoy taking part and seeing the wide range of entries.

Posting more than one IS self-defeating in terms of votes. My second story "Socks for Christmas?" will not reach the necessary 25 votes. It is stuck on 13 and likely to stay there because it is no longer "new".

I gain much from each competition. I would encourage anyone to try writing for the competitions because the effort is repaid in readers' attention.

It would seem to me that if you were prolific (or well prepared) and could cobble together several entries for the competition it isn't unfair. The stories are "judged" individualy and having three entries as opposed to one dosen't make any of the three better than they would be if they were standing alone. The more stories entered the more choices the readers have for fun holiday stories and thats really what the competitions are striving for it seems. To please the readership.
