Does anyone know which types of non-lethal or "electro-shock"weapons are most commonly used by police in the U.S.? Specifically, are there any police departments that still use stun guns, or have they all switched to tasers? Which model is most popular? Is there a specific model recommended for use by female officers?

Thank you in advance for any assistance. I'm working on a new story, and I'm going to need to resolve these details soon.

I think just saying a taser should be sufficient. From what I've seen, a lot of porn story readers don't really care about precision. You also don't want to look like you're shoving advertisements into the middle of your story. (unless that's your intent)

Actually, a stun gun works better for my story, but I don't want to use it if it has no basis in reality. I will have to rework things if a taser is required.

My .02 Cents

Assuming you have done some research, Taser is a tradename for a type of stun gun. Most all work on the same principle of shooting darts that conduct electricity to in effect stun a person. There are other stun devices of course and many more non-lethal devices either in use or proposed. You could simply invent what you need, afterall I can't find a Plasma Rifle in the 40 Hz range anywhere!

The US has local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies, each one buys its own equipment. The Taser brand seems popular and generic enough to simply refer to off-handed as a sort of short-cut. There X-26 seems in use by LAPD or County if I recall correctly for example. If you have a specific department in mind, research them, or call. Depends on the level of accuracy you desire.

As to using specific things or brand names, Ian Fleming used them extensively to add realism to his otherwise fantastic stories. Some critics applauded the usage and others felt it was overdone. You decide what feels best.

I've always wanted one of these:

:D

Look at images of various stun guns or tasers and see what you really need for your story. Some tasers have little metal darts that shoot out and zap the suspect from a short distance. Others are "contact" weapons.

I love pepper spray, too....

Thanks for the suggestions. I do not intend to do a commercial for any particular weapon model, but when I describe the use of it and the effects, I want it to be accurate. For that reason, a type in common use is important.

Etaski, the device referenced in your post is precisely what I would like my character to use, but I suspect it is not police issue anywhere in the US. I will probably go with the Taser, even if that means reworking the scene where it comes into play.

The TASER X26 is most widely used in the US. It has the traditional two prong cartridge, effective up to about 21 feet. The TASER Axion is equipped with a built in camera at the base of the battery, to record an incident from the officers perspective. The newest model on the market is the X3, which actually is able to deploy three seperate two prong charges. In theroy it could be used on three seperate threats. PM me if you need more advice. You can use it like a "stun gun" by taking the cartridge off. It has two contact points on the end, and is called a "drive stun".

Ahhh...this is precisely the information I was looking for. Thanks for your help.
