Today's discovery of mine.

According to geneticists, Neanderthals and modern humans mixed many times. However, it was very one-sided: Neanderthal males often mated with modern-type women but Neanderthal woman almost never mated with modern-type men.

Interesting why it happened this way. One is obvious, though: Neanderthal men liked modern-type women. And probably were liked by them.

A nice setting for a primitive-era Literotica story, what do you think?

I wonder how such story could be categorized. Both groups are humans so definitely not bestiality. However, the difference between Homo sapiens sapiens and Homo sapiens neanderthalensis was much bigger than between modern human races so putting it under 'Interracial' would be very weak.

It's on the spectrum between NonHuman and Interracial. It could be either, depending on how you focused it: a lot of difference, or not much. They must have had some basic language ability in common too, some ability to talk to each other. An interesting idea: it's never occurred to me to frame it as erotica.

Actually, nobody knows whether Neanderthals could talk like us. There are various theories it seems.

Yes, there's subtle evidence about the hyoid bone and Broca's area, not clear enough to be sure. But how could all this mating go on with us, them, and Denisovans, if there wasn't some rudimentary shared ability? A writer would have to hand-wave and make up a lot, but it obviously wouldn't be like doing things with a chimpanzee. You'd risk your story getting out of date if new evidence came along. But people here are writing about orcs and elves, so . . .

Well, sometimes you don't need language to communicate. We do understand each other with cats and dogs, right? And lots of couples in the past formed without a common language. (actually, it once happened even to me - though we later taught each other our languages).

So yes, there is a wide space for fantasizing.

I did a thread about this; one theory is that it was all about matriarchal social networks. As more numerous humans (because starting from a richer ecology) moved into Neanderthal territory the relationship was managed by marrying sons into the elite of human women. Like it should be!

But then you've got to deal with the Denisovans and the even earlier ghost lineages.

Depending on how it's written, there could be a lot of fun, interesting options for two or three sapient human species who can't speak to each other...

Maybe Neanderthals used some form of sign language, but only simple vocalizations? Growling, laughing, moaning are likely shared sounds...

Maybe Denisovans whistled or sang, speaking through tone more than syllables!

EXACTLY.

Thank you Penny, you really get me here. I just started imagining such scenarios. One should make a bit of research into what geneticists say and then, switching on one's imagination, can paint a really interesting picture.

This is a really interesting idea!

To have the culture and technology Neanderthals had, we know they could communicate in just as much detail as us. The question is how exactly? It’s thought their voices would be much more high pitched but as stated, archeological evidence and theories move like sand so broad strokes is probably best if looking for any kind of serious attempt at accuracy.

Unfortunately, kidnapping and violence are a reality of human existence and yes, most likely many couplings were against the will of the woman. If not physically, then as a bartering tool for food and shelter or as a trade off.

Another theory factoring in us overcoming our more powerful cousins is we just literally outbred them so who’s actually the top fuckers!?

Well, yes, we did outbreed them. We lived in bigger communities, we communicated better with each other, we had therefore fewer genetic problems.

But yes, while kidnapping and violence are likely to explain a some of such stories, I believe they wouldn't explain all of them.

Yes, it’s very hard to generalise! Each situation would be different… I think it’d have been a bit like when farmers encroached on hunter-gatherers’ territories in Europe later. There would be raids, trades, fights over resources but also cooperation, realising they had different strengths to learn. A modern human tribe could have provided wives for knowledge of how to hunt certain game or passage through a valley.

A character who is half and half would be facinating. Giving a look into both species’ and culture’s perspectives.

Yes. They say that patrilineal societies were more progressive than matrilineal because when a foreign girl was brought to another tribe, she taught her kids lots of skills she knew from her tribe and, in this way, knowledge and technology gradually spread to all human societies except the most isolated ones. While in matrilineal societies foreign boys came, fathered kids, went away and the technology stagnated.

So yes. We can imagine a Neanderthal tribe with this modern-type woman trying to teach her son or daughter something she knows, something that might even be seen by them as magic.

Not sure how easy it would be to draw lines so definitely. I think Maria Gimbutas’ theories on this are very thought provoking but outdated and possibly she was trying to push her own agenda… In reality, nuance is key!

Hmm… a nice, tangible example is probably Vikings taking Irish women to Iceland and how they created a new offshoot culture…
