I'm having the worse writer's block I have ever experienced in finishing the novel in the Gay Male category, A Timeless Place. If any of you are following this novel and have some ideas to imput into this story, or how I can overcome the block, I would sincerely appreciate it.

I find that writing about something totally different is helpful. i don't mean write a different story, I mean write about things that are going on in your life, a childhood memory, just anything not related to what you truly want to write about. Maybe even a letter to a friend or family member.

It's helped my quite unintentionally.

Two avenues

I use two ways to break a wtiter's block. Both mean stepping away from the task at hand. 1. Put your mind through some mental exercises. Games, work, playing with friends and all kinds of things to be done busily elsewhere. One of the best that I use is to go clubbing and dancing and even enjoying a play or two. Movies as well!

2. The other is to take it easy and even meditate. Leave things as they are and spend time gathering those situations that seem to make your heart beat at a quieter pace. This helps to ease the tension that something important must happen. If you waste time on incidentals, then the importance takes on smaller urgency and then may flow freely once again in direction you understood, Just had trouble filling in the blanks.

Altogether, distraction is the key!

Thank you both very much. I will try all of your ideas and see if it works. I need a break from it I think anyway.

Writer's block

When I get a bad case of writer's block I try a few things. One was mentioned before and that's work on something else or step away from the project. If I think about the story I try to figure out why I'm stuck. It could be a problem I didn't realize I have like a scened or plot won't work or it's weak so it needs rethought.

If it's just a slowing down of writing I try to write in a different medium. NOrmally I write on my computer so if I'm stuck there I'll sit down with a notebook and a pen. I find the slowing down of using a pen helps me to think slower and through things better. Maybe that will help you get your creative juices flowing.

writing thoughts or unthoughts

Billy... anything you try to do is a creative way to unblock your thoughts. Whether it is something related to writing or not. You know that your creative gene is there, it might just need some time to poke it's head out there again. Here if you need support with that... love you majorly.... Ri

Thanks, Ri. You've always been so very supportive of everything I've done, or attempting to do. And I am not too proud in asking your help. :D HELP!!!!!!

Something that helps me is to do some other, totally unrelated, artistic expression... I suck at painting but, sometimes, if I feel stuck, I break out the paints and brushes and thrash on a canvas with some music playing in the background. Other times, I'll take my digital camera, drive to a nice spot, and take artistic photos for an hour. Just something creative that's not writing...

One thing I remember reading... I think it was Kurt Vonnegut (SP?) who said that he'd use paper towel or toilet paper rolls to map out his stories and characters. He'd use colored pens, or crayons, to indicate the different characters, and the length of the paper would be the time span of the story... He would draw in the characters to see where they interact in time, then use that as a guide for writing.

Brian Eno, a rather famous artist and music producer (U2, Devo, Roxy Music, etc) invented a set of cards called The Oblique Strategies. He suggested pulling one when stuck, and meditating on the word or phrase.

Another thing one might try is the practice of lucid dreaming. Although there are tons of books on the subject, it is actually a simple process. Once you've got the technique, you can use lucid dreams to speak with the characters in your book, and find out where they want to go.

Anyway, I know that your book will unfold perfectly, with ease and grace.

Peace.

What did you need, hon? I haven't checked the thread for a couple of days, so just found this. You can have what you like from me for the next few days. I leave Monday morning for Florida, and won't be back till the following Saturday. ~ Ri ~
