I actually wrote a little How to piece on meeting people online, Rob. It's mostly common sense tips, but you might read it for a few ideas. I think you'll have a real advantage over alot of guys out there because you're not an asshole and you're not going to be degrading. Having respect for women is a definite bonus. Fortunately, (surprisingly?) that's not many.

I'm especially avoiding the ones who, either purposely or subconsciously, make it clear that the man should be in a position to spend a fair bit of money.

Understandable, but I'm dirt poor and likely to be that way for the rest of my life.

I second this. The women don't know you're emailing others, so it's not an issue of hurting anyone's feelings. Plus emailing, yahooing etc are excellent ways to find out if you like someone enough to meet. If, say, there are five women who seem interesting, you may find after some chatting that only one or two appeal to you.
