a mod vs. member poll

Assume we member were no longer allowed to insult or flame each other. Should the moderators, who would hand out warnings and bans, be allowed to have a private forum where they would be allowed to flame and insult the members?

No, I'm not kidding. This happened at another MB I was a member of until just a few days ago. And ad-driven site where they had solicited donations from the members to switch to more advanced software. Unfortunately their fun was ruined when their private forum was copied and uploaded to another website. (They're blaming hackers, but it looks like a moderator leaked the information.)

I think so. The moderators (and admins) are the ones who set and enforce the rules. Depending on the forum, there is a different protocol for public and private posts. The posts to the Mod board are (more or less) private - not much different than sending PM's to each other. In public, flame wars don't have to be tolerated.

As Ishmael pointed out from his experience elsewhere as a Moderator...BB's always have Private "Lounges" for Moderators and Friends of the Board.

So there's probably one here, too...

But the members weren't allowed to respond - at all. If we just skirted on flaming anyone we would get a warning. At least those who weren't the favorites would.

I just can't see anything ethical in having a mods-only forum and allowing it to be used like that when the members weren't allowed to insult them back. If they wanted to insult the members they could have saved it for their emails, since they were apparently all friends.
