I have not watched the news for over a year. If it comes up on the radio, I immediately switch the station. I do not read newspapers, and the only magazine I read is Smithsonian. When people come up to me with gossip, or want to talk about politics, I change the subject.

I just don't want to know.

My question is, am I sane?

Smithsonian means nothing to me I'm afraid.Wrong side of the pond. However,we have a comedian in the UK who you might know in N.America.His name is Billy Connolly and here is a quote from him.

Don't Vote! It just encourages the B*$*RDS !!

I wish I could avoid the television and news but I could never manage it.

You may be sane, but are you actually living? Was this a reaction to the overload media attention from 9/11, by any chance?

I'm not an expert and I don't play one on tv. If I met you though, I'd either assume you were hiding from the world, or that you were one of those stupid people who care more about the color of their next lipstick than about what is going on in the world.

Does sanity really exist? Or is it a figment of our imagination?

I don't wear lipstick so... ;)

I very well might be hiding from the world. But I'm not so certain that I need to know what is going on within it. I realized a while ago that the views I recieve of the world are fed to me, and that there is really no way to know the actuality of things, without having experienced or observed it personally somehow.

And that the reality of a situation is often open to interpretation. We all affect the world, it is true, in a small way- we are all life shapers to each other. But in the grand scheme of things I am small, and I've come to believe that my business lies elsewhere.

I don't want to know about the world, because the world is full of too much heartache. It is painful for me to see it. Not just where I am, but everywhere. So many millions of minds out there with so many problems. I begin to take the problems personally, and I feel them weigh on me.

I realise that I can release the weight by concentrating on the things that I directly affect, instead. When the "big bomb" finally drops, I dont want to have time to hide, and I dont want to know about it.

I guess it is a measure of peace.

How can you go through life without ever reading a newspaper, listening to the news? Are you hiding from reality? I can understand being disillusioned or disheartened by what's going on in the world, but to shut yourself of completely from current events is actually detrimental, at least intellectually.

Do you have no interest in anything or is this brought on by something else?

Either way, I think there's a problem here.

You're not insane...

...you just can't accept today's world...

P.S. I lost my sanity quite a while back so I would know

I can't decide why it "isn't life".

Life isn't safe and peaceful. Life has things like 9/11 in it. Life is REAL, not fairytale perfect with no bad "news" in it. Or good "news" for that matter.

Not knowing about "news" won't make it go away. Not knowing just hides reality, and reality is life.

The way I see it, my life isn't 3000 miles away from me, my life is right in front of my nose.

does it make you sane ...yes....it is normal to avoid or at least want to avoid those things which upset us. watching the news or reading the paper reminds us we live in a very imperfect world.

ignorance is bliss....unrealistic....but blissfull none the less:)

It was an EXAMPLE.

You're missing the life right in front of your nose, too.

But, that's your choice.

I'll give her credit for being aware of what she's doing and for more or less knowing why she's doing it.

Not everyone needs to know everything about what's going on in this world. And honestly some people don't need to know anything about what's going on in this world. If someone realizes that being bombarded by a steady stream of ugliness is making them unhappy why should they have to force themselves to deal with it?

And more to the point... When you sit here and actually view the ideas put forth by many of the people who post on this board who think they ACTUALLY do know what's going on in this world, you might just realize that she's better off than most.

I'll give another example. I do pay attention, somewhat, to what goes on in the world because I'm a student of History and the events of the world fascinate me with how they fit in to that History. But on any given day I'm pretty sure that most of what happens in this world doesn't really effect my day to day life and whether or not I know what actually happens doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

The 2000 Presidential election was fascinating in how it played out from a Historical perspective - but I do not see a single thing that is different in my daily life than it was during the Clinton Administration. I don't believe my day to day life would've been any different if Gore had won the election.

There are events that happen on a grand scale and effect everyone's lives, but more often than not events are given importance based on the need to either sell advertising or control the thoughts of others. Who needs that?

Fuck'em, MissVictoria. I think you're doing just fine.

I'm with Laurel on this one. I can understand completely why Miss Victoria perfers not to keep up to date on most of the news, which is basically just reports of misery and tragedy. I can look out my window and see that every day. I avoid local news and newspapers.I don't care how many people were shot in the city last night. I know it can be a dangerous place and don't feel a need to watch a neighbor or friend of the victim crying on TV. I generally watch the world news once or twice a week (usually the BBC news because it's so interesting to see things from a non American view point). I also read news magazines. Generally I'm not fond of TV news at all.
