Ok I have another question..............Anyone know id a Medical Dr. can request that a Pt.'s driver's license be revoked due to medical problems?????
This would help my folks situation after 2 bad wreaks in 4 years it is time to give it up but yet they won't....I will be calling in the moring to find out but was wondering today.........

Here in NY state, yes a driver's license can be revoked for medical conditions. Talk to their doctor, explain the circumstances. It's also for the safety of the other drivers as well as for themselves.

I THINK anyone here can turn a bad driver in to the state DOT and if they are a certain age, they have to actually take the driving test again to prove they can drive. I remember reading this a long time ago and threatening my parents that I would turn them in if and when the time came that they were old and bad drivers.

It really depends on how slammed the DOT or Dept of Public Safety (whichever issues licenses) in your state is. I know here in Georgia, there are a limited number of sites that actually test drivers for licenses and unless you are in their line by 9am you will not make it in the door that day. Driver's license renewals can be done at many other centers (including some at Kroger's), so unless there was insistent and persistent communication about a driver, there would be no action taken.

I suspect, that you're trying to find a way to avoid being the "bad guy" about this issue, and I wish you luck. As hard as it is for us to accept our parents (or grandparents) growing older, it's even harder for them to accept it.

So true.....I tried a few years ago and good bitched at BIG BIG time...........now with two car wreaks I want to make sure all stay safe and if the Dr.'s do it then it spares me.
My father is 83 and really don't drive but my mother who is deaf and had a cornea transpant just will not give up her driving rights ....I forgot the caderax in the other eye....I am too scared to let my kids in there car now and she is the one with the 2 wreaks under her belt....

This shit sucks let me tell ya for those that have not yet had to deal with this....

Here om NY state, you don't need to take any tests to renew a drivers license. Talk to your mother's eye doctor/surgeon. If her vision isn't what it should be he/she can have her license revoked. Giving up your driving rights is like one of the last freedoms senior citizens have, it takes away some of their independence. But I would rather have them pissed off at me and alive, then happy and dead, possibly taking an innocent life with them. DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) is where you should ask your questions, perhaps they can give you some suggestions to help your parents understand the risks they are taking by continuing to drive.

Hey Wizard, in California doctors can and do request the Department of Motor Vehicles review and/or revoke a person's driver's license. My wife used to work for a group of doctors, there were several patients who were medically unfit to drive and got reported to DMV.

However, DMV was just found liable in a lawsuit filed by the family of a Galt, CA police officer who was killed during a pursuit. He was on a motorcycle and slammed into a car that pulled out in front of him. The car was driven by an elderly man that the SAME cop had asked DMV to revoke his license six months previous. Turns out that DMV called the guy on the phone and gave him a 10 minute interview, after which they declined to revoke his license. So the system isn't perfect, but it might help in your case.

I think I have a pretty good shot with the Dr.'s ......Afew years back the cops pulled mom over and felt she needed to go back to school........Man she was pissed as hell but did and damn it to hell she passed but now I have to do something............
