A funny thing happened on the way to a story...

...I just finished the first draft of my very first novel. (stunned silence)

I published the first two chapters before I realized I needed to rewrite most of the early chapters to fit the more established "voice" the characters have toward the end of the novel. So how do I update a story that really isn't the same story anymore?

For example, the original chapter 1 is here:

My second (and nearing final?) draft is probably 60% different from the original version. If anyone cares, the rewritten version is up for feedback on my personal subreddit:

Should I just submit it in the original's place?

What about the existing comments? The one from the anti-homewreckers brigade no longer really applies because the story is more clear about the circumstances now. I know I can just delete them if I want, but I don't know what the protocol is for this kind of thing.

What about the story's rating and people who have favorited it? Is it fair to swap it out on them without notice?

If this isn't the right place to ask this, please let me know and I'll repost accordingly.

On a side note, I'd like to publicly thank Bramblethorn for being such a dear and listening as I gushed all my plot ideas in private messages. I'm sure I sounded like a love-sick teenager about the story, but it really helped to work through some of the ideas in the middle of my brain storm.

Writing the novel was a bit of an accident, actually. I wrote what I considered to be a mediocre one-off story, but then it surprised me and kept having children. It even made it hard to sleep at night until I finished a few days ago. I still can't believe i wrote over 70K words in a little over a month.

Could someone please delete this?

Hi,

I guess since I was trying to be cute in the subject line and didn't say what I needed up front, no one read my post. Either that or I posted the question in the wrong place and no one knows a good answer for updating stories.

In either case, I can't figure out how to delete this thread, so could someone in charge just delete it for me? Please and thanks!

You can edit your post but we don't delete the thread unless it breaks one of the forum guidelines/rules.

I saw it (and thank you :) but didn't have any suggestions. Author's Hangout might be a better place to ask.

I didn't respond because I don't encourage starting to post stories until after they've been completely written and polished--with the problem here being a good example why I don't encourage it--and don't feel compelled to help get problems with it unraveled.
